Description
Join Quatuor Magenta on May 9, 2026 at Memorial Hall (UNB) for an unforgettable evening of live chamber music.
The Quatuor Magenta was born and raised in Paris, France, but the musical identity of our string quartet is a collage of the different cultures, educations, preferences and passions of its four members. This eclectic program captures that kaleidoscopic identity in music: works by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne reflecting the multicultural roots of our members; a chef-d’œuvre by Fanny Mendelssohn, one of the first woman composers to enter the standard classical cannon, whose music we are especially proud to share as four female musicians; and our first commission, a piece by Raphaël Merlin, brilliant composer, founding cellist of the Quatuor Ébène and one of our most important musical mentors.
Program Includes:
Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems – Dinuk Wijeratne (b. 1978)
String Quartet No. 5 – Grażyna Bacewicz (1909–1969)
La Jeune Fille – Raphaël Merlin (b. 1982)
String Quartet in E-flat Major – Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847)
