THIRD ACTion Film Festival, the Instrumental Society of Calgary and the Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging invite you to share and connect over a wonderful film and discussion.

The event starts with a viewing of Piano to Zanskar followed by a hosted discussion.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Piano to Zanskar is an award-winning British documentary film which tells the story of Desmond O'Keeffe, also known as Mr Gentle, a 65-year old piano tuner who embarks on an impossible mission.

Facing his future in retirement, "sitting in deck chairs and eating lemon drizzle cake", Desmond decides instead to take on the most challenging and perilous delivery of his four decade career: transporting a 100 year-old, 80 kilo, Broadwood and Sons upright piano, from bustling London to the remote heart of the Indian Himalayas. 

Setting off from his busy workshop in Camden Town, and enlisting the help of two young and eager apprentices, Desmond’s ambitious destination is a primary school in Lingshed, Zanskar. At 14,000 feet above sea level, it is one of the most isolated settlements in the world.

DISCUSSION HOST & SPEAKERS

Dr. Ann Toohey (Host) is the Manager, Research & Scientific Programs at the University of Calgary Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging. In this role, she works to improve the lives of older adults by promoting interdisciplinary research and training in aging and engaging with the community. Ann also comes from a musical family, and has recently rekindled her lifelong passion for playing the violin.

Gianetta Baril's life has been devoted to sharing the transformative power of music through her beloved harp “Amadei”, with “virtuosity and delicate nuances gleaming like pearls…”. In response to the challenges presented by COVID 19, Gianetta was inspired to create the “Harp to Heart” project bringing live harp music to offer restful, comforting programmes for people who feel exhausted and anxious. 

Jon Parr Vijinski is a a PhD candidate in Nursing at the University of Calgary. His research is in the use of music for communication for people with dementia. He is also a composer, arranger, performer and producer. His styles range from the Baroque to the modern tonal classical music, jazz and art rock.
