Hand Habits

After three beloved, meticulously written Hand Habits albums – 2017’s Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void), 2019’s Placeholder, and 2021’s Fun House – Meg Duffy offered themself up for a 10-day writing trip. Working alongside Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic, Art Feynman) and in the final hours Philip Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker, Cass McCombs, Lonnie Holly), at Panoramic Studios in Stinson Beach, CA, Duffy surrendered to the present moment, trusting that whatever sounds and words emerged were meant to emerge.

Duffy’s devout fans will recognize their signature intimacy, artistry, and technical expertise in Sugar the Bruise. But they will also encounter an artist questioning what it means to be in control. Do we write songs or do songs write us? The same could be asked of poems, of books, of whole lives. All artists realize sooner or later that choice is elusive, will is illusory. We grasp for certainty, we write towards resolution, only to learn again and again that as soon as we think we’ve arrived, these destinations prove themselves to be mirages. This lesson holds for all people, too. And, yet, we laugh along the way, we fall in love, we make meaning, and we play. Sugar the Bruise is your companion in the void, your friend at the end, a reminder that, in the immediacy of loss, something beautiful has already begun.

Lightning Dust

Dark and synth-friendly indie rock duo Lightning Dust started out as a side project for members of Vancouver heavy rock institution Black Mountain, but as years went by the project grew to become a primary focus. The band's brooding, atmospheric rock progressed on several albums, taking a turn toward more electronic elements on 2013's Fantasy, 2019's Spectre, and 2023's Nostalgia Killer.

Shebear and the Hibernation

Shebear and the Hibernation is the sultry, surfy evolution of a solo project from Calgary based artist Claudia Tomczyk. When Claudia and her two long time friends Erin Prout and Katelyn Steinwand (Tiger Sister) came together to bring the songs to life, it evoked the awakening of a deep feminine energy. The band came together shortly before Covid hit and practices tended to start out a little more like therapy sessions. Honest and empathetic conversations were had, covering everything from the current political climate to the daily emotional struggles of each member. Drawing from all that has been shared within this sacred space, Shebear and the Hibernation fearlessly explore the complexity of emotion as they weave tales of pining for love and the inevitable pitfalls experienced along the way. With a flourish of fuzz guitar, melodic vocal hooks and interwoven harmonies, Shebear and the Hibernation's unique approach to familiar Canadiana motifs embraces indie-rock feels while seeking a higher power.
