Mythologies of Outer Space

This event will feature contributors to the recent book Mythologies of Outer Space (University of Calgary Press, 2025), which explores the ways we have thought about outer space throughout history, and how we should be thinking about current space exploration. Keith Sidwell will read from his translation of Lucian’s True Histories, one of the very first fictional works to imagine a trip to the moon. Noreen Humble will discuss the history of moon voyages in literature. Poet Kyle Flemmer will read from his series of poems based on the life cycles of stars. And finally, Jim Ellis will introduce and screen the short film Afronauts (2012), which is based on a strange but true event from the Cold War Space Race.
