Music in the Streets: Michaela Slinger

Michaela Slinger was singing as soon as she could talk, and early on discovered her love of performing. After singing the national anthem at an NBA game at age three, Michaela joined musical theatre and immersed herself in piano, dance, acting and vocal lessons. At age ten she began writing songs, and her focus fully shifted from theatre to singing and songwriting in high school.

Once she arrived at university, Michaela joined cover band Little Birds and began performing her original material at open mics. She also gained studio experience and recorded two original songs for her school’s music album projects. Michaela moved back to Vancouver after graduation, and her writing style continued evolving into cross-genre singer-songwriter, pop, and R&B. She recorded her first professional single, Flux, with award-winning producer Nygel Asselin of Greenhouse Studios the following summer.

Since Flux, Michaela has co-written and recorded with producers in Vancouver and Calgary, receiving praise for her vocal range and resonance as well as innate ability to craft meaningful lyrics and soaring melodies. With comparisons drawn to Maggie Rogers, Joni Mitchell, and Lorde, Michaela delivers simultaneous power and softness in all aspects of her music. She is working on her first EP with acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and producer Louise Burns—a nearly 20 year industry vet formerly of Madonna’s Maverick Records—at 604 Studios.
