Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, composed in 1846 follows the Old Testament prophet as he warns Israel of an impending drought, challenges the prophets of Baal in a fiery contest on Mount Carmel, flees Queen Jezebel’s wrath, and finds renewed strength through divine aid before ultimately being carried to heaven in a whirlwind; the oratorio weaves these episodes into a dramatic narrative of faith, struggle, and redemption.
