Description
Do not miss this special Miyake Taiko Drumming Workshop on May 23 - 24 at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, with the Masters of Taiko, Japanese guest teachers (Kazuhiro Tsumura & Haruyoshi Tsumura) from Miyake-Jima (Miyake Island) Genou Doushi-Kai!
Study from the source of this magnificent traditional drumming! Miyake Jima Geinou Doushi-Kai is an organization that is based on promoting and preserving Miyake Taiko. Miyake Island has a 200-year-old traditional taiko drumming, known as Miyake Taiko, which supports the mikoshi celebrations of Kami Tsuki Jinja, an island Shinto shrine where they drum for nine hours during the festival. The organization was founded by Akio Tsumura, who comes from Miyake Island and taught the world-famous Japanese taiko group KODO, the Miyake taiko style. His sons continue the tradition, and the eldest, Kazuhiro Tsumura, leads the organization and is a former member of KODO. They continue to collaborate and perform with Kodo on a regular basis in Japan.
We offer two Short Workshops: ideal for beginners or for advanced players as a review.
We also offer a weekend Intensive Workshop(Sorry, this is SOLD OUT): 10-hour workshop (5 hours a day) covering advanced techniques and ceremonial aspects of this sacred festival drum. *Bento service is provided for the Intensive Workshop participants only. Please select your choices.
Thanks to UBC's Department of Ethnomusicology for their support.
There will be 2 x Short (2-hour) workshops, one on each day, and 1 x Intensive (10-hour) workshop split up over 3 sessions across both days (see the agenda below) (Sorry, Intensive Workshop is SOLD OUT). The Short workshops may be suitable for beginners or as a refresher for those who have previously studied the Miyake form. The Intensive workshop features advanced techniques, kiyari (the chant), Kagura (Shinto ceremonial) opening, and various advanced ensemble techniques. Beginners may join the intensive workshop.
The workshop instruction will be conducted in Japanese, but English translation services will be provided.
All workshops and sign-in will occur at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Asian Centre Building - Music Studio (Room 105) - see map
The following workshop fees are in CAD and do not include Eventbrite service fees. If you are a Canada Miyake Taiko Kai member, please email canadamiyaketaiko@gmail.com for special discounts before registering.
