Vancouver International Jazz Festival
Matt Hoyles with special guests Stella Soul, Gentle Mind, High Stakes and Rachael Schroeder
MATT HOYLES (Vancouver) // http://www.matthoyles.com/
If a bald, beardy, bluesman ever had a sound, then this is it!
Matt Hoyles is a low down, wailing bluesman, hailing from deepest darkest New Zealand:
After broadening his horizons through obtaining a bachelors degree in music, and becoming proficient in both composition and orchestral scoring (that’s right, this bluesman is really just a big nerd), distant shores began to whisper their siren song. The call was too strong to ignore so, leaving New Zealand behind, Matt travelled to Europe and somehow managed to survive as a wandering minstrel until, that is, he finally took the long awaited flight to the Great North and settled in Vancouver, Canada.
Drawing inspiration from Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Son House, BB King, Eric Bibb, Gary Clark Jr., Robert Cray, Seasick Steve, Otis Redding, and countless others, he combines all influences both classic and modern to forge a powerhouse of passionate, blues fuelled soul that is wholly his own! Gritty guitar, wailing harmonica, mad foot percussion and howlingly expressive vocals combine to create a unique rootsy sound that will get you stomping your feet and clapping your hands like there’s no tomorrow.
Playing as a one man whirling dervish of bluesy soul explosions, and on certain nights, when the moon is just right, Matt can be caught accompanied by his band of rogues ‘The High Commission’, where, accompanied by groove driven bass, hard swinging drums, and wailing sax, the magic really starts to happen.
Matt Hoyles’ debut EP ‘The Nimbus Sessions’, was released on April 20th 2015 across all major digital music distributors. The EP was recorded live with an extremely talented group of local musicians, and filmed in its entirety to truly capture the energy of the music.
STELLA SOUL (Vancouver) // https://www.facebook.com/stellasoulmusic/
Vancouver based Kaleidoscopic Soul band.
GENTLE MIND (Vancouver) // https://www.facebook.com/gentlemindofficial/
Gentle Mind is a Vancouver-based, musical group whose sound sways somewhere between rock, Rn’B, and funk. The group is comprised of Camille Brown (Vocals), Michael Oliver (Guitar), and Tobi Amoo (Bass). With instrumentals heavily inspired by the likes of Radiohead, Hiatus Kaiyote, Half Moon Run, and D’Angelo along with song lyrics written by the Montreal born and raised synesthetic, Camille, you can expect soulful vocals, peppery drums, sultry chords and melodic bass. With their debut EP ‘After Earth’ fresh off the press, as well as new videos coming out, and a handful of shows around the corner, Gentle Mind is a band to keep your eye on.
HIGH STAKES (Vancouver) // https://www.highstakesband.com/
The edge is sharp. The commentary is current. We are High Stakes.
RACHAEL SCHROEDER (Vancouver) // http://rachaelschroeder.com/
Rachael Schroeder is a singer, songwriter, producer and audio engineer based out of Vancouver, BC. She grew up listening to Imogen Heap, Queen, Electric Light Orchestra, and Ella Fitzgerald. Rachael is passionate about creating a sense of belonging through her music. Her synesthesia (perceiving music and sound as colour) allows her to paint her songs with a distinctive musical palette. Rachael is currently creating her next EP, playing shows around Vancouver, working in the industry, and is a happily recovering perfectionist.
