FILM SYNOPSIS

Retired after a long career as a flight attendant, Émilienne Belhumeur is fulfilling the dream she had while up in the sky: “Having chickens and coffee while leaning against a fence.” For the last 20 years, she’s been looking after the living with a constant sense of wonderment while patching up her house and barn that are slowly falling into disrepair. From time to time, her granddaughter Daphné drops by for a visit and a chat about the world around them. Through the seasons, Émilienne’s small farm becomes an undeniably chosen setting that acts as a quiet retreat and allows her to resist the various influences of the outside world. As a keeper of forgotten knowledge, she introduces us to her time-based way of life that she might have to give up.

SPEAKERS

Coralie Lemieux-Sabourin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a feature-film screenwriting degree from INIS as well as a Master's degree in theater from UQAM. She is passionate about different styles of writing, from poetry to scriptwriting and playwriting. Moving seamlessly between cinema and theater, she is particularly interested in people living outside the norm, and more broadly, in human contradictions and resistance, which she likes to explore through forms that challenge reality. Sensitivity is at the core of her work. In 2020, she presented her creative thesis Partition pour corps ouverts (Script for Open Bodies), a play exploring her experience as a liver transplant recipient that combines documentary theater, autofiction and performance as well as critical and humorous perspectives. She has two short documentaries to her credit, including Processions (2017), which chronicles the daily life of an unusual senior living in a retirement home, and won the 2018 Best Film Award from the L’Âme à l’Écran festival (REGARD Festival). Émilienne et le temps qui passe (Émilienne and the Passage of Time) is her first feature documentary.
