Description

Inspired by her then two-year-old daughter’s question, “Do we die when we sleep?”, Rachel Meyer explores how wonder interrupts the limits we place on ourselves. As imagination and dream-space seep into everyday life, the work opens a poetic meditation on possibility and childlike wonder.

Former Ballet BC member Rachel Meyer creates a self referential universe with its own fantastical logic. Objects and setting take centre stage as the work unfolds through a constellation of encounters and parallel experiences, inviting audiences to witness the subtle moments that exist between people, between actions, and between what is and what can be.

Through virtuosic physicality, sculptural objects, and immersive theatrical design, Meyer creates a world where memory, play, and possibility continually reshape one another.

Rachel Meyer is a Vancouver-based choreographer, performer, and Artistic Director of Autobody. Her choreographic practice builds a complete and complex universe for her audience to inhabit through a multitude of devices acting in concert: casting, sets, musical composition, timing, and symbolic iconography.

Meyer trained at the University of Utah, the Northwest Professional Dance Project, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. She has performed with Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, Ballet BC, and the Michael Clark Company. She received a Princess Grace Award in 2010.

Since 2017, Meyer has focused on developing her own choreographic practice, creating full-length site-specific works and commissioned projects for Ballet Edmonton and the EDAM Choreographic Series. She has been a Resident Artist at Left of Main and a Ballet BC Artist in Residence. As Artistic Director of Autobody she is developing a long-term interdisciplinary artistic program.
