Laura Cortese

To call Laura Cortese a globetrotter would be to drastically understate her adventurous spirit. Her nature, as a musician, has always been to go where the wind takes her, settling into new ecosystems in which to adapt and grow roots until the breeze blows once more. In these travels, she has found a global network of collaborators–friends and mentors who have helped her forge bonds and grow mastery in many musical traditions, all of which she approaches with the same reverence and devotion that she felt when picking up a fiddle for the very first time as a young child.

Now, more than twenty years into her already impressive career, she makes her home in Ghent, Belgium, where she continues to do what she is best at: building musical community. Despite a global pandemic and rolling lockdowns, Laura Cortese created opportunities for local creatives to come together, sharing space and inspiration with each other in every gathering. In so doing, she was inspired to create a new solo show based on original American folk songs. When Laura is alone on the stage, the audience becomes her band, stamping and clapping like a kick and snare drum, sometimes singing along sweetly and occasionally reminiscent of an enthusiastic gang vocal. She can be found performing internationally, exploring, and exalting in her passion for American roots music.

En tant que musicienne, elle a toujours eu pour habitude de se laisser porter par le vent, s’installant dans de nouveaux écosystèmes où elle s’adapte et s’enracine jusqu’à ce que la brise souffle à nouveau. Au cours de ces voyages, elle s’est constitué un réseau mondial de collaborateurs – des amis et des mentors qui l’ont aidée à tisser des liens et à maîtriser de nombreuses traditions musicales, qu’elle aborde toutes avec le même respect et la même dévotion que ceux qu’elle ressentait lorsqu’elle a pris un violon pour la toute première fois, alors qu’elle était encore enfant.

Aujourd’hui, après plus de vingt ans d’une carrière déjà impressionnante, elle s’est installée à Gand, en Belgique, où elle continue de faire ce qu’elle fait le mieux : créer une communauté musicale. Malgré une pandémie mondiale et des confinements successifs, Laura Cortese a su créer des occasions pour les créatifs locaux de se réunir, partageant un espace et de l’inspiration à chaque rencontre. C’est ainsi qu’elle a eu l’idée de créer un nouveau spectacle solo basé sur des chansons folk américaines originales. Lorsque Laura est seule sur scène, le public devient son groupe, tapant des pieds et applaudissant comme une grosse caisse et une caisse claire, chantant parfois en chœur avec douceur, ou bien formant un chœur enthousiaste. On peut la voir se produire à l’international, explorer et célébrer sa passion pour la musique roots américaine.
