Jo Passed is the songwriting and creative project of Jo Hirabayashi, a musician based in Toronto and Vancouver. The project released two EPs "Up" and "Out" before signing with Sub Pop and Royal Mountain and releasing the album "Their Prime" in 2018.  Following a maintenance hiatus, Jo returned in 2025 with the digital single "Weekend" and a sophomore album "Away" released Jan 23rd 2026 on Youth Riot Records. The live show for the project features a rotation of exceptional live musicians from all across North America.

Reviews of “Away”.

“...more grounded and decidedly song-forward methodology.... ‘Mother Night,’ is a stand-out in this sense: here, Hirabayashi is easily at his most Eliott Smith, with the singer's doubled vocal inching into that sliver-sized middle ground between saccharine and melancholic."

-Exclaim 2026

“Molds the unlikely of inspiration of stress and frustration into a smooth, fun, indie rock rock record”

-Outside Noise 2026

"...dynamic, angular, restless… With a potent DIY vision that’s infused with post-punk, psych, grunge, and garage rock influences, there’s a knotty, unpredictable, zig-zagging vision to Jo Passed’s music that also yields some wild standout moments"

-KEXP 2026
