Description
Westcoast Music Award winners, Jasmine Jazz is back for another beautiful live concert of music that brings a unique interplay of Asian and Jazz instruments.
On the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, Jasmine Jazz, an unusual and exquisite summit of traditional Chinese and jazz instruments, will take place at the serene setting of the celebrated Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.
Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble members, Jirong Huang (erhu), Sarah Yusha Tan (guzheng) and Zhongxi Wu (suona) will perform alongside Jodi Proznick (bass), Bill Coon (guitar), James Danderfer (clarinet/sax) and special guest Liam MacDonald on percussion. The concert will feature the Vancouver premiere of Breath of Joy by Coon and new arrangements by Huang, Tan and Wu.
Jazz will be interpreted through traditional Chinese instruments; traditional and contemporary Chinese music will be given a new life through jazz.
According to Proznick “The evening will be all about musical conversations, an east meets west experience, full of beauty, harmony, mutual respect and interplay. The repertoire will be a beautiful mix of songs pulled from jazz repertoire, traditional Chinese folk music and original composition.”
We gratefully acknowledge the support of Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of BC through Community Gaming Grant and the City of Vancouver
