For our third annual January Blues on Friday January 16, we present a very special guest,
Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar. In the heart of Toronto, the captivating musical journey of
Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar began to take shape. Samantha, a 2-time JUNO nominee, and
a 7-time female vocalist of the year nominee at Canada’s Maple Blues Awards, is a powerful
vocalist with a soulful voice that could pierce the depths of emotion.

A household name in Canada’s blues and retro-soul scene, Samantha and her label Gypsy Soul Records have been
dubbed “The Daptone” of Canada. The band’s fresh and genre-bending approach to blues-
based soul music is one of a kind and has even confused Rolling Stones magazine editors as to
the band’s genre. In fact, while Samantha’s latest record topped soul charts around the globe,
she got a JUNO nomination in the blues category while receiving a “pick of the month” for best
country song from Rolling Stone Magazine.

The band released their debut album, Send the Nightingale, in 2015, which showcased their
exceptional song-writing and vocal prowess. The album received critical acclaim and garnered
awards including the Maple Blues Award for New Artist of the Year. Subsequent albums, such
as Run to Me and The Reckless One, continued to build on their reputation for delivering
emotionally charged, soulful music, earning the band two JUNO Awards for Blues Album of the
Year in 2018 and 2020.

In 2021, Samantha and the band earned the honour of being the first
Canadian artists to be nominated for International Artist of the Year at the 2021 UK Blues
Awards. Samantha is one of two female artists ever to be awarded CIMA’s Road Gold award for
selling over 25,000 tickets over any 12 month period on the road. Their recording The Reckless
One stayed at #1 for 38 consecutive weeks in the US Roots Radio Charts, topped the UK
Independent Blues broadcasters charts at #1, and managed to sneak into the Billboard Top
200. We are excited to welcome a new generation of blues legends to the Hugh’s Room Stage.

296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
