Improv 101: Intro Part 1

This is a six week course with sessions running 7:30-9:30pm on the following Tuesdays:

July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 11, 18. There is no class on August 4 (Calgary Fringe).

Classes are for students aged 18+

Please register with your preferred name so we know who will be in the class and what to call you!

Maybe you’ve heard the amazing ways improv helps with creativity and communication. Or maybe you’ve seen a show and thought: “I want to do that one day!” Either way, Improv 101 is the place to start!

Learn the basics of improv in a fun, safe, and low-pressure environment, taught by one of the fantastic Kinkonauts instructors.

This is Part 1 of a two-part introduction course – each part is six weeks long. It is offered multiple times throughout the year. 

This class assumes students are starting with no improv experience. If you have some improv experience already, email Devin to see which class would be appropriate for you.

Note: If 13 or more registrations occur, this class will be split into two separate classes running simultaneously in different rooms with different instructors. Students who register will be notified if this split occurs, and will be given the option to indicate instructor and classmate preferences.

Instructor (Class 1): Nicole Zylstra

Nicole has been living, breathing, teaching improv for close to 30 years. As a veteran of Dirty Laundry, the Kinkonauts, and Shadow Productions alone, she has decades worth of performance experience. She has guested with Loose Moose Theatre, the Improv Guild, and the International Improv Festival. Her duo with Sara Simpson, All Request Heartache, has performed at the Calgary Fringe, Big City Improv Fest (Toronto) and Montreal Improv. She is also a professional actor who has written and performed on stages across Canada, as well as some wee bits on your small screen at home.

Nicole is coming back to teaching at the Kinkonauts after a bit of a hiatus; she is also an instructor in the Speech Department at MRU, teaching Public Speaking and Oral Traditions, Narration and Storytelling. And she misses you. A lot.

Instructor (Class 2): Anton Matyushin

Anton Matyushin is a comedian based in Calgary. With over 10 years of experience combined in improv, standup, and sketch, he's performed on stages all across the country, and has trained at various renowned comedy theatres in North America such as the iO and The Annoyance in Chicago.
