Description
The Kinkonauts, Calgary's Improv Lab, has delighted audiences with extraordinary unscripted theatre since 2006. Every show is a unique, never to be repeated adventure. Enjoy the tightrope thrill of performers living completely in the moment. Improvised stories and characters you'll still be laughing about at the bar later.
This is a six week course with sessions running 7:30-9:30pm on the following Tuesdays:
July 8, 15, 22, 29, August 5, 12.
Next offering: Tuesdays July 8 - August 12, 2025.
Classes are for students aged 18+
Note: This class has reached enough registrations to be split into two classes! If you are signing up with someone and wish to ensure you are placed in the same class, or if you have an instructor preference please email Devin after registering! (Preferences will be honoured as much as possible, but equal class sizes will be the first priority)
Maybe you’ve heard the amazing ways improv helps with creativity and communication. Or maybe you’ve seen a show and thought: “I want to do that one day!” Either way, Improv 101 is the place to start!
Learn the basics of improv in a fun, safe, and low-pressure environment, taught by one of the fantastic Kinkonauts instructors.
This is Part 1 of a two-part introduction course – each part is six weeks long. It is offered multiple times throughout the year.
This class assumes students are starting with no improv experience. If you have some improv experience already, email Devin to see which class would be appropriate for you.
Karlyn Morris (she/ they) has been with the Kinkonauts since 2021, starting out as a regular attendee of weekly drop-in Accelerator classes until eventually graduating from the Conservatory Programme in 2023. She has since featured in a variety of Kinkonaut-produced openers and mainstage shows, including (but not limited to) Love at Christmas, Murder Mystery, Intrusive thoughts, Worst First Date, and most recently, Secrets and Shadows.
Karlyn graduated from Mount Royal University in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in Education, this past June marking the wrap-up of her 8th year as a classroom teacher. Karlyn's teaching philosophy aims to balance explorative inquiry with drilling rote; by teaching strategies and drilling skills through targeted games, group-discussions, and open-ended scene work, Karlyn hopes to support her students to develop a greater sense of ease, creative independence, and self-confidence when expressing themselves artistically.
Christopher Ford is one of the original bad boys of comedy and one of the original very good boys of earning trips to the candy store with his mommy. He has taught people of all ages to improvise, act, sing, dance, and play Hot Cross Buns on the recorder, and he'd be happy to teach you, too. Chris has performed regularly with the Kinkonauts for 7 years in shows like Improvised Clue, Improv: The Musical, and Good Sport! and Starfleet Confidential. He acts regularly in theatre around our fair city in productions for Morpheus, Simply Theatre, and Jubilations, and is the proud co-father of both Weird Pal (Calgary's quarterly song parody night) and the weekly Villains of Comedy (Calgary's dedicated alt comedy stage).
