Description

Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History

Debunk and debate local histories at Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History! Every month, a historian or specialized expert will share their research and offer new perspectives on the history we think we know.

Every Hot Dogs & Hot Takes event kicks off with a short presentation on a historical topic by the guest speaker, followed by an interview facilitated by The Confluence President Jennifer Thompson, and an open discussion where you can offer your knowledge and questions about the evening’s topic.

What’s a hot take without a hot snack to go with it? Fuel the evening with a delicious hot dog and sea salt chips for $5. Thank you to Harvest Meats for sponsoring the hot dogs for this event!

150 Years Later: Reflecting on Fort Calgary’s Legacy

The year 2025 marks 150 years since the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) established Fort Calgary on the land near the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers — land that was already a place of gathering and ceremony for the Niitsitapi of the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations, the Dene people of Tsuut’ina First Nation and the historic Northwest Métis.

In commemorating this milestone, The Confluence invites community to reflect on the legacy of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) at Fort Calgary and examine the historical and contemporary impacts of settler-colonialism.

Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History is one of many events planned for 150 Years Later programming. Throughout 2025, The Confluence is presenting a symposium, art exhibitions, Quest Theatre’s We Are All Treaty People, special museum exhibits and more.
