This March 28, Gulod Tanawin presents their debut album - Ginhawa

Ginhawa exists in multiple Filipino languages, translating to breath, life force, ease of life, and well-being. It describes a state of integration between the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual: a lightness nurtured through relationships with family, community, spirit, and self.

Three years in the making, Ginhawa was developed through many long nights of experimentation and musings, and long-distance collaboration through file-sharing, voice notes and phone calls. It is the result of an extensive process including travel, research, and lived experience across Samar, Leyte, Bicol, Cebu, Manila, and across the Pacific in the Pacific Northwest of Turtle Island.

From the bright and piercing energy of the diskoral and fiestas of the Visayas and Bicol, to the fogged out dancefloors of the PNW, GT experiments with hybridizing music across regions. Bisaya dub, Bisaya tikno, ragatak, and budots converge with lush West Coast sounds of ambient, dub & deep hypnotic techno, and bass. Ginhawa draws from reflections on soundsystem cultures, movement, and martial arts lineages, alongside the interconnectivity between the Pacific Northwest of Turtle Island and Southeast Asia.

On March 28 at KW Studios, Gulod Tanawin presents a night of experimentation featuring live electronic performances, soundsystem driven music, and a sports Arnis tournament.

SPORTS ARNIS

Sports Arnis is the modern competitive form of the Filipino martial art, with a focus on timing, footwork, and control. The tournament will feature exhibition matches between practitioners from our training community who we have spent years learning, practicing, and growing alongside.

Located 111 West Hastings Street Vancouver. Look for the KW sign off Hastings Street for the entrance.

KW Studios is an accessible venue. Folks in need of an elevator can access one through the lobby entrance. Accessible bathrooms are available downstairs. KW events are both auditory and visual. Sound can be loud, but earplugs can be provided free of charge. Lighting is generally lower but can be adjusted and raised to accommodate people who need brighter venues.

KW events are NOTAFLOF (No one turn away for lack of funds) . NOTAFLOF tickets are of limited capacity. Please consider your financial need relative to folks in the DTES community where we reside before asking to pay less. We practice the policy NOTAFLOF specifically to allow access to folks negatively impacted by gentrification projects within the DTES community. If you are a student or low income worker, please consider saving up for the next show as the artists and KW staff are also low income workers.

This event takes place on the unceded and occupied homelands of the Coast Salish peoples of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are immensely grateful for being allowed to continue to live, work, and play on these lands.
