Sonic Bikes improvises with the soundworld of bicycles, and Bilal Nasser’s a punk & post-rock infused set delves into resistance, commemoration, and lament.

In the first set, local artist Stephanie Orlando brings her Sonic Bikes to the stage. A bespoke ensemble of improvising percussionists will make use of reassembled and sonified bike parts to animate a familiar soundworld of gears, spokes, and pedals. The performance takes on added weight as each artist exerts and sustains a particular pedal-powered labour to realize the piece, which is found in their constantly negotiated collective space.

During each of the other nights of the festival, Stephanie’s sound sculptures will be set up in the venue for audiences to interact and improvise with.

During the second set, Bilal Nasser will perform delay- and reverb-drenched solo works for guitar and voice. He will also be joined by a chamber ensemble to present a genre-bending suite about genocidal crisis and diasporic despair. Bilal blends post-rock, post-classical, punk, electronic, and shoegaze in a musical statement of commemoration, resistance, healing and lament. This performance marks the Toronto launch of Bilal’s album, Every Martyr is a Universe, on Constellation Records.
