March 23: Prairie DIY (Do it yourself)!

Before shopping malls and grocery stores, life on the prairies required resourcefulness and ingenuity! Indigenous peoples and early settlers had to use what they could find on the land to meet their daily needs. Here’s your chance to try your skill at a range of fun “Do it Yourself” projects.

Camp Details

  • Camp Date: March 23, 2026
  • Camp Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Drop-Off Time: 8 – 9 a.m.
  • Pick-Up Time: 4 – 5 p.m.
  • Camper Ages: 6 – 11. Campers may be divided into two groups depending on camp registration numbers.
  • Price per camper: $75, GST exempt.

Can you believe that the land we’re standing on was once an ancient lake? Discover the fascinating geology of the Alberta prairies. We explore the prairies’ physical history through unique land features and learn about stories to be found right under our feet.

Explore the importance of water in Alberta and the ways Indigenous peoples and settlers channeled the power of water. Discover more about this mighty resource and learn about the wide variety of plants and creatures that live in Alberta waterways, rivers, and wetlands.

The mountains west of Calgary are home to great forests, but did you know that we have many natural environments right here at Heritage Park? From the mountains to the plains and everything in between, explore the Park’s biodiversity. This will be a day full of exploration and creating crafts to use in your own backyard.

Before Google maps, people had to rely on traditional navigation techniques such as land features, maps, and the stars to find their way around and discover some handy tips to make the most of your outdoor experience.
