Description
Discover the beauty of precision and pattern in this hands-on workshop, Intro to Kumiko Woodworking, led by local carpenter and artist Rob LeBlanc. Set in our Gallery and surrounded by artwork from the Wood Work exhibition, this fun and approachable 4-hour workshop invites you to slow down, work with your hands, and try something new.
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that uses small, precisely cut pieces of wood fitted together without nails or fasteners to create intricate geometric panels. In this introductory session, you’ll learn the basics of cutting, assembling, and finishing a kumiko panel using simple hand tools. Rob will guide you through the safe use of a Japanese pull saw and basic chiselling techniques in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Participants will create an Asanoha panel—a classic kumiko pattern inspired by the hemp leaf, known for its repeating star-like geometry and visual rhythm. Your finished piece can be hung on the wall and enjoyed as both art and a reminder of newly learned skills.
No previous carpentry experience is required. All tools and materials are provided—just bring your curiosity and creativity.
