Abstract:
In high seismic regions, traditional stabilities analyses and assessment of factors of safety are not sufficient to assess the potential seismic performance of a structure. Instead, deformation analyses are recommended to evaluate the potential response to seismic loading, assess liquefaction susceptibility, and estimate the distribution of displacements within an earthfill dam or tailings storage facility. This presentation will showcase an assessment for a tailings storage facility in South America, where we estimated the seismic loading, and completed deformation modelling to evaluate the expected performance given a significant seismic event and used the analysis results to design key components of the TSF.
Bio:
Vicki Nguyen, P.Eng., is Senior Geotechnical Engineer at the Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd in Calgary, AB. She has over 15 years of experience and has led probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard assessments and deformation models in FLAC 2D and 3D to assess and design slope stabilization measures, estimate seismic deformations, and calibrate model parameters based on field and instrumentation data for tailings facilities, dam structures, and slope stabilization projects around the world. Notable projects include 2D seismic deformation modelling and seismic hazard assessments for sites in Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Papua New Guinea that are subject to significant seismic loading.
