Description

Living in Nanaimo as a student can be tough — rising rent, food costs, unexpected expenses, and not always knowing where to turn for help.

Join us for Food 4 Thought: Surviving in Nanaimo, a practical, no-judgement workshop designed to help post-secondary students better understand the supports and resources available right here in our community. This session is hosted by your Students’ Union and presented by Sarah Pump, Executive Director of Poverty Advocacy Nanaimo, a trusted local organization that works directly with people navigating low income, housing instability, and systems that aren’t always easy to access.

This session will walk you through:

  • Local food supports, including food banks and low-barrier meal programs

  • Housing resources and tenant supports in Nanaimo

  • Help with income assistance, benefits, and navigating government systems

  • Access to essential services like medical, dental, and even veterinary support

  • Where to go when you’re not sure what help you qualify for — or how to ask

Poverty Advocacy Nanaimo works on the front lines of affordability and access, supporting individuals through advocacy, system navigation, and community education. This workshop is a great introduction to the services they offer and how students can use them — whether you’re struggling right now or just want to be prepared.

As always, enjoy a free catered lunch while gaining practical knowledge that can help make student life more manageable. Please let us know about any allergies or dietary restrictions when you RSVP.

Part of the Food 4 Thought series — where a healthy meal meets useful, real-world learning — this event is open to post-secondary students and focused on meeting you where you’re at.
