Kick off Femme Wave with our first ever animation package! From Taipei to our own backyard, Femme Film is proud to present a diverse package of genre and talent. Shorts include fantastical hand-drawn animation, explorations of identity through stop-motion, and mesmerizing sci-fi.

8:45PM Dirty Douks

Dirty Douks is a collaboration of Alexa Bunnell and Skylar Eyre, both of Doukhobor descent, based in Mohkinstsis (“Calgary”) on Treaty 7 Territory in Southern Alberta. Dirty Douks negotiates the parallels within their queer and Doukhobor identities as resistive movements; clumsy translations, tender dialogues and bright pink beet stains attempt to find the in-between of these identities. Using knowledge both well known and unknown, Dirty Douks simultaneously examines the recalibration of history as well as the futility (or failure) of the passing on of generational history. Dirty Douks fumbles through the history of actions, failing to properly translate or neatly fit their queer bodies within the framework of Doukhobor(ness). Through the investigation of Doukhobor history and generational trauma within the lense of queerness and a tilted perspective, Dirty Douks creates an emotionally informed recalibration and reformation of Doukhobor history.

Window Lamp is an interdisciplinary collective project lead by front-woman Haley Gunn. They are always on the lookout for femme and non-binary collaborators across all platforms. Their lo-fi, indie rock tunes will induce a dream-like trance fueled by lots of reverb and clever lyrics.

10:15PM Shades Lawrence

Coming fresh outta Montreal, Shades Lawrence is an artist, poet, producer and DJ of mixed British, Jamaican, Irish and Scottish descent.  Coming out of a tradition of spoken word, she highlights social justice themes over smooth beats. She has shared the stage with a variety of artists, including Strange Froots, Backxwash, Big Freedia and Princess Nokia. She’s one of the artists the Femme Wave crew is the most excited to see - so don’t sleep on it!

 

11PM Kimmortal

Unceded traditional lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh ,Vancouver, BC

Kim Bince Villagante, also known as Kimmortal, is a queer filipinx artist and wordsmith based on unceded coast salish territory. Their experimental hip hop tracks have gained traction across North America, having performed in festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW), Junofest, Kultura Filipino Arts Festival, Rifflandia and Queer Women of Colour film festival. Kimmortal just released their second album X marks the Swirl via Coax Records in 2019. Their single "I'm blue" was ranked top 20 music videos in Canada and recently CBC music recognized Kimmortal as a dynamic force in the future of this country's music industry on the 2019 Polaris Music Prize Longlist.. Kimmortal’s live performances are multifaceted, incorporating dance and visual art into the mix in order to create an unforgettable experience for audiences and artists alike.
