Description

Whether it was ancient Romans watching gladiatorial bloodbaths, Parisians lining up in 1809 for their first glimpse of the catacombs, day-tripping to the former Dachau concentration camp, booking a tour to Chernobyl, or stopping at Ground Zero while in New York, people have long felt drawn to sites of mass destruction and death, both natural and human-made. The phenomenon is known as Dark Tourism. Dr. Lynn Fallwell takes you on a journey; exploring some of these often regarded macabre sites, examining why tourists visit, how they behave, and what it says about our relationship to living and dying, in this month’s Culturally Speaking presentation series.
