True blue rock & roller El Niven & The Alibi hits the legendary King Eddy stage on May 31.
About El Niven & The Alibi:
Unapologetically original, uncompromising in their vision, Edmonton-based El Niven and The Alibi deliver music which is both bittersweet and and rank rock ’n’ roll. This longstanding Canadian duo – El Niven and drummer Jeff Burwash – inhabit a working-class world of tough days, long nights and sweet times. With a natural bent for the lyrical, their songs are a resolute study of addiction, sanctions, forgiveness and hard-love delivered with high intensity and raging honesty. Rooted in rock ’n roll, with a nod to Southern grunge, El Niven and the Alibi’s music is infused with a healthy dose of whiskey-laden Country, resulting in what they dub “Dangerous-Western.” Their music comes at you with the the dark force of a prairie storm and leaves you wondering what happened as the clouds retreat and silence settles.
Playing across Western Canada, the U.S. and South America, El Niven and the Alibi has performed with Big Wreck, U.S.S, Grandson and The Arkells.
After receiving a Creative B.C. grant to record a new album in 2022, El Niven and the Alibi worked with Producer Mitch Merrett over the winter of 2023 to record 12 new songs. The first single, Cigarettes hit #24 on Canadian Active Rock Radio and the second single, Unleashed, is featured on Much Music and Sirius FM as well as getting radio play across Canada.
El Niven and The Alibi are currently touring theatres with an original salute to CCR featuring 90 minutes of the classic rock band’s hits and deep cuts adapted by El, with some originals mixed in for good measure. The act has been selling out Casinos and Theatres - with auditorium dates booked for the near future.
In true troubadour tradition El Niven and the Alibi have an on-going project, the “Amerika Or Busk Tour.” In 2020, it was the “Baja Or Busk Tour.” Driving the entire length of the Baja, Mexico from Tijuana, to LaPaz and back, El Niven and the Alibi picked up gigs and played in the streets, sharing their brand of “Dangerous Western” with the locals for over three weeks. In 2019, the duo completed an “America Or Busk” tour, driving from Edmonton, Alberta to New York, and across the US to L.A. then back to Edmonton. En route, El Niven and the Alibi played fully-amplified and electric gigs on the streets, leaving the locals to wonder what hit them as they straightened their shirts and retrieved their hats as this eclectic duo faded into the long stretch of highway.
Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
