FILM SYNOPSIS
After Rebecca, a 75 year-old immigrant mother, gets fired without cause from her lifelong job as a hotel housekeeper, her son takes her on a bucket-list adventure to reclaim her life. As she struggles to find work, he documents a journey that uncovers the economic insecurity shaping not only her future, but that of an entire generation.
A tender love poem from son to mother - CBS News
The film will be followed by a pre-recorded interview with Sian-Pierre, the filmmaker, and Rebecca, the subject of the film. We will then have Dr. Sherry Dahlke from the University of Alberta address the themes of the film followed by a Q&A.
SPEAKERS
Sian-Pierre Regis is currently a Firelight Media Fellow 2018-2020 and a Film Independent Documentary Fellow 2019. He is also an award-winning journalist, on-camera personality, and cultural critic with an undying love for both pop-culture and social responsibility. He has been a contributor for CNN, HLN, MTV and CBS, covering stories of youth political activism and pop-culture.
Rebecca Danigelis emigrated to the US in her early 20s and began working in hotels. As a single mother, she raised 2 sons while working non-stop to put food on the table. After 40 years with her employer, who was also her landlord, she was fired and given 2 weeks’ pay and told she had to vacate the apartment she had lived in for 40 years.
Dr. Sherry Dahlke is an associate professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. Her current study examines if e-learning activities designed to improve accurate knowledge about aging and working with older people will improve student nurses' perceptions about older people. This project includes an advisory group consisting of older people, gerontological experts and partner organizations (AgeWell, Can Age, CGNA) that will brainstorm strategies to diminish ageism in Canada.
