Synopsis:

Don Pasquale is an elderly and wealthy bachelor who threatens to disinherit his nephew Ernesto unless he pursues a wealthy marriage. Despite this threat, Ernesto insists on marrying the woman he loves, the beautiful but poor Norina, and is therefore disinherited from Pasquale’s wealth. Enter Dr. Malatesta who persuades his friend Pasquale to marry his sister Sofronia, fresh from a convent and the perfect, shy, demure woman. In truth, Malatesta and Norina scheme to teach Pasquale a lesson that money can’t buy love or happiness, and true love will always win.

Artists:

Peter Tiefenbach is Toronto-based pianist, composer, vocal coach, writer, and conductor. He is a member of the faculty of the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he coaches singers, lectures on orchestral literature, and serves as music director of the school’s fall opera production. Peter enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer, composer, and broadcaster. He and Mary Lou Fallis first performed together in 1997. Highlights of their collaboration include successful Toronto runs of her shows Primadonna and Primadonna Does Shakespeare (2002). A familiar presence on CBC Radio, Peter is the former host of the Radio Two program The Arts Tonight. He has orchestrated and conducted a concert for CBC radio and television and of music by Noel Coward and Ivor Novello with the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. He has also collaborated with baritone Russell Braun and soprano Donna Brown. In addition, Peter made his acting debut as Gerhard Krachmann in the playSimpl at Toronto's Tarragon Theatre and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre.

Alex Halliday returns to the Ensemble Studio for his second year after studying opera at the University of Toronto. Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, he ventured home to obtain his Bachelor’s of Music (Performance) from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. After graduating, he pursued an Opera Masters from the University of Toronto and then went on to work for the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio where he is still currently contracted. Alex makes his COC debut this season as Guccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.

Soprano Midori Marsh was recently named by the CBC as one of Canada’s hot classical musicians under 30. Past engagements include Sarah Thorpe in No One’s Safe and Johan’s Mother in Silent Light (Banff Centre); Frasquita in Carmen (Waterloo Symphony); Arminda in La finta giardiniera, Rose Maurrant in Street Scene, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, and Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park ( UofT Opera); Annina in La Traviata ( Cambridge Symphony Orchestra); Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Portland Summer Opera Workshop); Laurie Moss in The Tender Land and Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann (Opera Laurier). In October 2019 she took home both the first prize and the audience choice award at the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio Competition, and is currently a member of the COC’s young artist ensemble for the 2021-2022 season. This fall with the COC she appeared as Nella in Gianni Schicchi and as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem. In the Spring season she will appear as Annina in La Traviata and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte.

Originally from the Lake Temiskaming region of northeastern Ontario, Yanik Gosselin is now based in Halifax, a region traditionally known as Mi’kma’ki. He received his BMus from the University of Ottawa and his MMus from McGill University. Recently, Yanik was invited to take part in Tapestry Opera’s New Opera 101 workshop and performed in Songbook XI. In 2021, he participated in Lucky Penny Opera's 48-Hour Opera Project for which he collaborated on creating a short abstract virtual opera called The Box. He is currently developing several concert ideas that take inspiration from beloved German song cycles to tell contemporary stories. Yanik always seeks to contribute to the growth of the Canadian opera sector by collaborating on innovative works. He is particularly interested in the art song repertoire (particularly Schubert and Britten) and 1970s rock (from glam- to prog-), and is passionate about storytelling in all its forms. As a performer, Yanik finds creative freedom in transcending genres and artistic disciplines.

Hailing from O’Leary, baritone Parker Clements is thrilled to be coming home to PEI to perform at St. Mary’s this summer. Parker is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto’s Diploma in Operatic Performance program where he studied with Wendy Nielsen. He also had the opportunity to learn the joys of Zoom rehearsal and lockdown performing. He received his Master’s in Vocal Literature and Performance from Western University (London. On.) and is a proud alumnus of the UPEI Bachelor of Music. Parker’s operatic role credits include: Des Grieux (Massenet’s Le portrait de Manon), Silvio (I pagliacci), Edmund (Jonathon Dove’s Mansfield Park based on the novel by Jane Austen), The Lecturer Argento’s A Waterbird Talk, a solo opera for baritone), Escamillo (Carmen), Don Giovanni, Figaro & Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), and Marco (Gianni Schicchi). Parker is currently living in Toronto and is a member of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir. He is also a butcher shop supervisor, gin connoisseur, and cribbage enthusiast.

Taylor Donald, lyric soprano, holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Prince Edward Island, and is currently completing her Master of Music in Opera at the University of Toronto. Taylor has been performing both piano and voice from a young age, with most of her recent work occurring in Toronto, Ontario. She has performed in several choirs, including Luminos Ensemble and the UPEI Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, with featured solos in works including J.S Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah. For the past 10 years, she has been a frequent provincial finalist in the PEI Kiwanis Music Festival for both voice and piano, winning the provincial vocal award (Glenn and Maryanne Palmer Award) on two occasions. She also placed first in the Dr. Frances Gray Performance Competition in 2019. In March of 2020, Taylor made her operatic debut as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Synopsis: 

Don Pasquale est un vieux et riche garçon qui menace de déshériter son neveu Ernesto s'il ne fait pas un marriage riche. Malgré cette menace, Ernesto insiste pour épouser la femme qu'il aime, la belle mais pauvre Norina, et il est donc déshérité de la richesse de Pasquale. C'est alors qu'entre en scène le docteur Malatesta, qui convainc son ami Pasquale d'épouser sa sœur Sofronia, fraîchement sortie du monastère et parfaite femme timide et réservée. En réalité, Malatesta et Norina ont pour objectif de faire comprendre à Pasquale que l'argent ne peut acheter l'amour ou le bonheur et que le véritable amour est toujours gagnant.

Il est membre de la faculté de la Glenn Gould School du Royal Conservatory of Music, où il encadre des chanteurs, donne des conférences sur la littérature orchestrale et assure la direction musicale de la production d'opéra de l'école à l'automne. 

Alex Halliday revient au studio de l'Ensemble pour sa deuxième année après avoir étudié l'opéra à l'Université de Toronto. Taylor Donald, soprano lyrique, détient un baccalauréat en musique de l'Université de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard et termine actuellement sa maîtrise en musique d'opéra à l'Université de Toronto. Taylor joue du piano et du chant depuis son plus jeune âge, et la plupart de ses travaux récents ont eu lieu à Toronto, en Ontario. Elle s'est produite dans plusieurs chorales, dont le Luminos Ensemble et le UPEI Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, et a interprété des solos dans des œuvres comme le Magnificat de J.S. Bach, le Requiem de Mozart et le Messie de Haendel. Au cours des dix dernières années, elle a souvent été finaliste au Festival de musique Kiwanis de l'Î.-P.-É., tant pour le chant que pour le piano, et a remporté le prix provincial de chant (prix Glenn et Maryanne Palmer) à deux occasions. Elle s'est également classée première au concours d'interprétation Dr Frances Gray en 2019. En mars 2020, Taylor a fait ses débuts à l'opéra dans le rôle de Pamina dans La Flûte enchantée de Mozart.
