Sophie Lukacs is a Budapest born, Montreal-based, kora player, and singer songwriter. She blends Mandingue, folk, pop, and classical music genres to create a distinctive style. Inspired by 7 years of study in Mali with Kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté, and her musical background in Western classical violin and Hungarian folk, Sophie's music - rooted in love and vulnerability - forges an intimate bond with audiences all over.
She released her debut album in 2023 featuring two tracks with legendary Habib Koité, which won Best Global Roots Music Album of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards. On stage, Sophie is accompanied by cello and percussion, and sings in all the languages she speaks: English, French, Hungarian and Bambara.

Join us for the Dream Nation Apparel 24-Hour event benefiting the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.
This event features multiple race options including a 1 hr, 3 hr, 6 hr, 12 hr, and 24 hr event. Participants can join individually or as a team of 2-10 people. The goal is to cover as much distance as possible within the chosen duration.
Capacity Limit: 50 participants total across all event categories.
New for 2024: The 1-hour option!
Enjoy the beautiful scenery in Duncan and challenge yourself against the clock. This event supports the Victoria Hospitals Foundation, which raises funds for medical equipment, special projects, education, and research at Royal Jubilee, Victoria General, and Gorge Road hospitals. VHF donors fund an incredible 40% of the equipment in these hospitals.
The event takes place live at the Cowichan Sportsplex and also features a virtual event capped at 500 participants, which can be completed any day during September 2024.
Cash Prizes:

$750 - Top fundraiser (must raise over $10,000 to qualify)
$250 - Top promoter (must refer at least 10 people to qualify)

All participants will receive swag from Dream Nation Apparel, including virtual run participants.
Some food and refreshments will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have special requirements. There will be room for participants to set up tents for the 6, 12, and 24-hour events.
No refunds for registrations. If the event is canceled, registration funds will be donated to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

If harvested and spread over Primus's 'Pork Soda' album on Vinyl, then Mahler's 2nd symphony also on Vinyl is layed on top of that one, making a music/mold sandwich, you can frisbee toss it to the moon and in 7 nights the moon will spit back a map containing directions to the next SHARON show. Go on. Get to it. What does it say? Oh yes, it says September 17th at the VEC. Welp you already put in the effort of making that monstrosity so you might as well go to that show.
Diamond DayFrom janky glitch-pop drums to jangly guitars on the verge of explosion; Diamond Day reshape shoegaze into their hazy electro dreamworld. Led by Rosier’s Béatrix Méthé and Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, Quinn Bachand, the project began when Quinn moved to Boston as a teenager. The pair discovered an undeniable synergy after meeting at a music festival. Every weekend, Quinn would hop on a Montréal-bound greyhound to write, record and develop songs in Béatrix’s plateau apartment. Their debut record, Connect the Dots, is a “hypnotic and shoegazey alt-pop fever dream.” Méthé and Bachand enlisted a dream pop A-team–including producers Jorge Elbrecht and feeble little horse’s Sebastian Kinsler–to synthesize their expansive aesthetic over 10 tracks. Méthé’s magnetic vocals, catchy hooks and stream-of-consciousness lyrics became the band’s razor-sharp focus, cutting through Bachand's billowing noise-pop soundscapes and creating retro-futuristic euphoria.
Hot PotWhat’s in the pot? HOT POT is a gaggle of baddies that bounce in the space between Jazz, RnB, Reggae, Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop, and other genres of black music from this hemisphere, enhanced with a strong Asian flavour. They love laying down a feral og groove and busting out moves with the crowd, almost as much as they love talking about themselves in third person.

For over 25 years, Victoria's Canadian Beauty has been keeping the Dead alive with their spirited performances. Expect lots of group improvisation, folky roots-country, harmony singing and dance floor favourites. As always, there's a different setlist every show!
Canadian Beauty's first ever Grateful Dead tribute show was in 1999 at Thursday's Pub, later known as Logan's. Over the years tributes to Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, The Allman Brothers Band and Gram Parsons have appeared.
Canadian Beauty and all their variations endeavour to make the music they play their own. As skilled improvisors, they'd rather put their personal stamp on the songs than perform note-for-note renditions.
Members of the band have performed with: Jon and Roy, Jesse Roper, Pharis and Jason Romero, Paul Pigat, Aidan Knight, The Best Guys In Town, and many more.

Pindian:Pindian is a Kwakwa̲ka̲'wakw and Nuu-Cha-Nulth MC born on lək̓ʷəŋən Territory (A.K.A Victoria B.C) who in 3 years of sobriety, has found immense healing in expressing themselves through lyricism in the genre of Hip Hop which they view to be an innovative, creative-native continuation of their nation’s tradition of storytelling, told through artistic practices since time immemorial.
Pindian started performing in the Summer Season of 2022 and since then has shared their songs on various stages and venues both in Victoria and Vancouver such as the Vancouver Playhouse for the 3rd International Indigenous Hip Hop Awards’ Trade Show at the Vancouver Playhouse and UVIC’s Farquhar Auditorium.
They aim to honour the roots of their culture and old school Hip Hop while sharing their stories through rhyme which make statements about healing through the intergenerational, traumatic effects of colonization, honouring their west coast lineage while also embracing tricksterism and having a few laughs and a good time while doing so.They are also a mural artist, painter, theatre performer and facilitator of workshops.
Cameron Schaefer:A new favorite in the Victoria music scene, Cameron Schaefer played keyboards in rock, blues and jazz bands for many years. Now he writes and performs his own songs. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll spit up on yourself.

In support of the Victoria Women’s Transition House (VWTH), established in 1974, which provides shelter, counseling, and support services for women and children affected by intimate partner violence. Each year, VWTH supports over 2,000 women and hundreds of children and youth across Greater Victoria.

Local diva and Sharon Jones super-fan Katherine Beckett has assembled a fiery 12-piece band to help pay tribute to the late, great Miss Sharon Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings on what would just about be the 8th anniversary of her untimely passing from pancreatic cancer at the age of 60. While there will never be another Sharon, her memory lives on in her music, and in our memories of the times she graced the stage here at the AGPH.

Born in Baku, Ozan Ardic is a concert composer with a background in fortepiano performance. Embracing a puristic philosophy, Ozan organizes his compositions into individual opus numbers, each offering a glimpse into his life. 
These works provide a purely audible experience, devoid of additional subtext, labels, or extramusical context. By omitting names, titles, or accompanying artwork for his compositions, Ozan aims to let each listener engage with the music on a deeply personal level, free from external influence. This approach invites listeners to discover their own meanings and emotional connections within each piece. Their attention and appreciation help each opus find its true place within the larger narrative of Ozan’s artistic journey.
Since 2012, Canada has become Ozan's second home, where he was warmly welcomed. Proud to stand among his fellow Canadians, he has dedicated his debut tour to the country that embraced him. The concert program opens with Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons, a work by one of the most influential composers for Ozan growing up and a fitting musical complement to this program.

The 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator located on the first floor: as you enter the building go down the ramp to your right and the elevator is on the left at the bottom. Blair Fisher - vocals / trumpet / flute / keys
Blair has been involved with Frank Zappa’s music since his formative musical years. A dog-eared version of the Frank Zappa Songbook from 1973 remains a cherished resource. In many ways, Zappostrophe’ represents a culmination of his experience – the wide range of musical styles, intricate and complex arrangements, combined with zany humour make Zappostrohe’ a challenging and fun project.
Blair has a wide range of musical experience, as a performer, educator, and technologist. He holds a B.Mus. (Victoria) and M.Mus. (Miami) both in trumpet performance.​Professional performances include solo performances and work with orchestras, jazz and rock groups throughout Canada, the US and Europe. Although he was trained as a trumpet player, he also performs professionally on vocals, keyboards and flute. ​An ‘early adopter’ of music technology, Blair has been involved in recording and creating computer-based music for many years. As an educator, he has directed award-winning jazz and concert bands and developed and Coordinated the Douglas College Music Technology Diploma.​
Blair Lewis – guitar / synths / vocals
Blair Lewis has been playing the guitar for a really long time, and is mostly self-taught. He took playing the classical guitar pretty seriously for a couple of decades (though he still sucks at sightreading) and managed to study with Ralph Towner (of the band Oregon) in the nineties; this led to his forming and leading the group Out of the Woods, to play some of Ralph's beautifully lyrical and harmonically gnarly tunes. His major rhythmic influence is the sound of several hundred antique clocks his father used to restore and dutifully kept wound, ticking and bonging in polyrhythmic precision. He really enjoys some fairly weird music, and being able to dip into what Nick calls the “deep well” of Zappa like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. (Where else do you get to comp in 11/16 and play the rubber chicken?) Playing in Zappostrophe led him to explore the possibilities of guitar synthesizer, which he says “opened up a whole new world of weird and wonderful noises. And it turns out the trombone patch on it is pretty good, so I get to pretend I’m Bruce Fowler.”In Blair's non-music time he likes to walk uphill, find out new things, and read these things called 'books'.
LJ Mounteney – vocals
LJ Mounteney is an in-demand Canadian singer, performer and songwriter known for her soulful, bluesy twists on inspired classic tunes as well as her own catchy originals. Her current album, Mama Danced, was produced by Canadian blues legend Jack Lavin and is an upbeat album of 13 blues and roots songs. Mama Danced has received favourable reviews as well as radio and internet airplay worldwide.
Mounteney studied under jazz singer Jennifer Scott at Vancouver Community College in the Commercial and Jazz Music program and also with vocal coach Cecile Larochelle. In addition to her studies, Mounteney has spent the past several years working in various pop, R&B and jazz ensembles. She loves the soulful side of Zappa and likes to delight audiences with her gospel, funk and blues infused tones on songs like Sofa, Andy, Montana, Zombie Woof and more! She is delighted to be part of a group that navigates and plays the wonderful and challenging music of Frank Zappa!
Guenter Schulz – guitar
Guenter Schulz is an accomplished guitarist mastering a variety of styles. Equally at home in Jazz, Electronica, Country, Rock and Pop. His love for handmade live music clearly shows in every performance.Educated at the Blankeneser Konservatorium and the Universitaet Hamburg (both in Germany), Guenter Schulz's study of classical guitar and influence of Carl Orff and Stravinsky is apparent upon hearing his musical finesse. This training lends a cultured edge to his playing, and combined with the more contemporary influences of John McLaughlin, Goldie and Einstürzende Neubauten, unquestionably contributed to the success of KMFDM, the industrial rock group with which he was main guitarist, co-producer and songwriter in the 90s. With KMFDM, he recorded 9 full length CDs and recorded soundtrack work for Mortal Kombat, Johnny Mnemonic and Bad Boys, all the while touring extensively throughout the USA and Europe. In addition to this work, Schulz has remixed music for Rammstein, Skinny Puppy, Dink, Front 242, Pig, Die Krupps, as well as produced remakes of songs by Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, NIN, AC/DC, and Van Halen. He participated in location sound recording and soundtrack composition for the documentary "So Good, So Far", shot on location in Ghana, Africa, and has had his photographs published in entertainment magazines, including Spin Magazine, Max and various others. In all, Schulz is credited on over 20 albums. Furthermore, over the last few years, he has produced 3 albums and toured with his band Slick Idiot, participated in the North American tour of "supergroup" Pigface, created various remixes for international bands, and has produced and recorded for a multitude of other bands. Furthermore Schulz was invited three times to tour Japan with his group.
Cole Tinney – keyboards
Vancouver musician and pianist Cole Tinney has played and performed extensively throughout Canada and the United States. Tinney’s versatility shines through multiple genres, including vintage forties, funk, blues and jazz but his virtuosity is powered by his excellent classical training. A soulful musician, he belies an old soul musical wisdom and his energy and talents fuel his performances in high level groups such as the freak out group History of Gunpowder, Vancouver’s Frank Zappa inspired band Zappostrophe’, and the award-winning Canadian singer Krystle Dos Santos. In addition to performing, Cole is a dedicated educator and piano instructor as well as the Director at Coja Music, a North Vancouver based private music school.
Brent Gubbels – bass
Brent Gubbels has been a Vancouver based professional musician and teacher for nearly twenty years. In that time he’s worked with a number of local musicians and ensembles including the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Gypsalero, Rumba Calzada, John Reischman, the Vince Mai Project, Jesse Zubot, Dal Richards, Lee Aaron and Dee Daniels.Since 1992, he has toured North America and Europe extensively and played a variety of international jazz and folk festivals. Brent can be heard on recordings by Oscar Lopez, Gypsalero, Juno nominees Susan Crowe and Compadres, Juno winner James Keelaghan, and others.
Jason Overy – drums
Jason divides his time between performing, teaching and composing in the world of drums and percussion. He has served as Musical Director of Uzume Taiko Drum Group since 2004 and holds a BMus from UVic. Notable drum set acts over the years include Vancouver’s Zappostrophe’, big bands the Bruce James Orchestra, Urbana Big Band, crooner Michael Buble, Klezmer/jazz fusion sensation OLAM, Punk legend’s D.O.A., and their front man Joe Keithley (Duo), Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, Ray Carroll (the Platters), West Coast Chicago, Son of James, Ska band the Hounds of Buskerville, funk all-stars Just The Funk and Dynamic Tension, indie rock bands BlueDirtGirl and The Sons of Kain, as well as, many well known touring theatre shows including the Rocky Horror Show, Urinetown, the Wiz, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oklahoma, Oliver, Cabaret, and including original work with Fringe festival legend TJ Dawe and many other collaborations. A life-long prog rock and Frank Zappa fan, it is truly a dream to get to play this incredible music with these incredible musicians.
Nick Apivor – percussion / vocals
I have been playing all manner of percussion for over 40+years. As a professional musician I have played and enjoyed classical music, rock, jazz, theatrical, and many other styles. Probably one of the reasons I love playing the music of Frank Zappa. So many styles of music are in his compositions, and so many skills are required: reading, improvising, knowledge ofwidely varying genres, etc. and humour! Because humour DOES belong in music! I received my BMus degree from UVic in 1986. I generally travel once a year to study and get inspired; whether that is trips to NY to hear the world's best jazz musicians, or studying with Brazilian masters at Cazadero Brazil camp. But honestly, everyday playing Frank's music is a learning experience. Music is Best

Caravan World Rhythms presents the joyous Afro-Latin Jazz music of Robin Layne and the Rhythm Makers from Vancouver.  Join us for an intimate matinee concert at the Mint in downtown Victoria, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and beverages before or during the concert presentation.   All Ages are Welcome!  (bring the family!).
With roots in rhythmic traditions around the globe this groove heavy ensemble delivers music that transcends the bounds of tradition, blurring the lines between jazz and folk as they carve out new territory for the marimba at the forefront of the sonic landscape. They have been making a name for themselves on the festival circuit over the past few years since their debut release Memories in 2018, appearing on the main stage at Mission Folk Festival this past summer and at the Downtown Jazz, Vancouver International Jazz Festival. 
Over the past decade and a half, Juno nominated percussionist Robin Layne has steeped himself in rhythmic traditions around the world from Cuba to West Africa to Mexico and beyond. He brings these influences to bear in his compositions that are inspired by his travels. Robin has worked with many of Canada's finest global artists and toured throughout China, Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada. 
The band’s upcoming sophomore album is produced by award winning and cutting edge folk fiddler/producer Jaron Freeman-Fox and draws heavily from the folkloric marimba traditions in Mexico and Colombia.
Joining Robin Layne are Liam MacDonald on drums, Jocelyn Waugh on trumpet, and Wynston Minckler on bass.

Come fall in love with Odesa, Ukraine, the Pearl of the Black Sea! Kommuna Lux 7-piece band brings you the heritage music of their beloved hometown. Klezmer, Balkan, and Urban Chanson, with a dash of Ukrainian Folk and powered by rocket fuel, Kommuna Lux impacts the crowd with a nostalgic, high-energy Big Band sound from the bygone days of speakeasies and rum runners.
Opening the evening is Victoria's Balkan music legends, Bučan Bučan! Made up of a very colourful and talented collection of musicians playing trumpets, violins, clarinets, tubas, accordions, trombones and drums, Bučan Bučan has been entertaining crowds for the last decade with its variety of traditional, eastern European brass band tunes and original material inspired by Balkan rhythms and melodies.
