Derek Wayne Martin (Vancouver) // www.derekwaynemartin.com
Derek Wayne Martin, of Atlanta, Georgia, recorded his first EP entitled A Million Miles in 2011 and quickly established a sound nestled somewhere in between Americana and indie rock. It's definitely a windows down, sun-shining, road trip EP. Joshua Pickard with nooga.com writes that Martin channels "the spirit of artists like Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams,” both of which are artists Martin looks up to. The tracks “Out of My Head” and “Prostitute” channel the guitar vibes from 90's Americana, and rounding out the end of the EP with the song “Too Much” takes things forward into Martin's next two EP's.
2013's "Hard Times," and 2015's "Ghost Town" take a departure from the rock and roll and delve into the more intimate side of things. “I realized that writing songs like “Too Much” came natural. It's very natural for me to write songs about hurt with a sense of poignancy that says 'yeah, this sucks, but maybe it won't be like this forever.’”
In 2018, Martin was able to flesh out his crowd favourite, “Too Much” in the studio. With tastefully reverb-saturated vocals and a melodic guitar hook courtesy of Daniel Nelson of the band Focus Fox, this reimagined single is likely to continue its streak as the most authentic song of Martin’s repertoire.
Above all else, Derek Wayne Martin is damn sure to make you feel something. "I'm hoping that in some place, in some room, there is at least one person who can say, 'Man, I know exactly how that feels.'"
Flawed Hearts and The Waiting Room (Victoria)
SAM CAVIGLIA is a singer and songwriter from Vancouver, BC whose latest project - a collaborative and heartfelt EP aptly titled Salmon Friends - integrates guitar, violin, bass, drums and piano into an expansive and impassioned sound. Supported by a constantly evolving collective of fellow musicians and instrumentalists, Sam’s narrative unfolds harmoniously as a warm, visceral experience.
Sam’s musical background is rooted in the Seattle grunge scene, as evidenced by the stripped-down, heavy style of his former band Fey; the release of Salmon Friends’ first EP signals a new phase for the multi-talented artist as he transitions into a more tender, folkier sound. As a world traveller, an enthusiastic collaborator and a compelling lyricist, Sam taps into the various currents of his perception to turn feelings into songs, and songs into cultural experiences.
Rooted in the paradox of nature, Sam’s music evokes both solitude and connection - in it he reveals a glimpse of his most authentic self, which he builds on with each inspired performance. The release of Salmon Friends’ EP cues a turning point for Sam - and friends - as he makes plans to embark on a sprawling tour to recreate that emotive experience for fans and collaborators along the way.
