Twice shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and previously named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine, David Mitchell has provided the world––time and again––with compelling stories on pages and on the screen. The bestselling author of Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks and Number9Dream and one of the acclaimed screenwriters behind Sense8 and the upcoming film The Matrix 4, Mitchell is known for expansive and deeply inventive storytelling that fundamentally shifts our cultural landscapes.
On July 26, Mitchell will share his much-anticipated new fiction release, Utopia Avenue, the “untold story” of a relatively unknown British band from London’s psychedelic scene in 1967. Fronted by folksinger Elf Holloway, guitar demigod Jasper de Zoet and blues bassist Dean Moss, Utopia Avenue released only two LPs during its brief blazing journey from the clubs of Soho and draughty ballrooms to Top of the Pops and the Top 10; to Amsterdam, Rome and a fateful American fortnight in the autumn of 1968.
The novel, Mitchell's first in five years, is the story of the band, its music––and its age. Full of riots in the street and revolutions in the head; drugs, schizophrenia, love, sex, grief, art; of the families we choose and the ones we don't; of fame's Faustian pact and stardom's wobbly ladder.
Join the Vancouver Writers Fest and the Toronto International Festival of Authors for this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime discussion on Sunday, July 26 at 4pm PT/7pm ET. Your ticket includes a copy of Utopia Avenue (shipping included).
