Curator's Talk: Stitching Status - Time, Labour, and the Value of Beads

Beads may be small and intricate, but their histories reveal powerful stories of identity, value, and status. In celebration of One Bead After Another: Beaded Footwear From Around the World, join Director & Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack for an informative and illuminating exploration of beadwork traditions from around the world, and their role as markers of wealth, prestige, and cultural meaning.

From royal adornment and ceremonial regalia to trade and personal expression, this lecture traces how beads have signaled belonging across time and place. At its core is the labour behind the work: the skilled craftsmanship, generational knowledge, and cultural practices embedded in every stitch. By centering time and labour, the talk challenges conventional ideas of value—asking what makes something “luxurious,” and who defines it.

Through cross-cultural perspectives and historical insight, this talk reframes beadwork as more than decoration, as a powerful language of status, resilience, and artistry.

About Elizabeth Semmelhack

As Director and Senior Curator at the Bata Shoe Museum, Elizabeth applies her extensive cultural and art history background to guide the mission forward while exploring the multiple roles and meanings of footwear through innovative exhibitions. With over 30 exhibitions curated, Semmelhack has helped transform the Bata Shoe Museum into an internationally recognized center for footwear scholarship, revealing how shoes illuminate our understanding of diverse social, political, and cultural histories across time and geography.

Named by FASHION Magazine as one of the world’s “top five game-changing fashion curators”, Semmelhack’s perspective and expertise have been featured in major publications, broadcasts, and television shows across the globe. She has authored nearly 30 articles and chapters as well as numerous books and catalogs, including Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture (2015), which has sold over 30,000 copies worldwide.
