Join Syreeta Hector for a contemporary dance class focused on weight transfer, movement patterns, and somatic movement exploration that invites participants to explore the intersection of identity, race, and contemporary dance. Emphasizing comfort and openness, this workshop offers an opportunity to connect through dance, moving with intention and expression.
Syreeta Hector is a dance artist and educator from Toronto, Ontario. As a highly accomplished performer, Syreeta has worked for internationally recognized companies like Adelheid Dance Projects, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, Political Movement, and Toronto Dance Theatre. She is a proud graduate of The National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and has achieved her Master of Arts in Dance Studies from York University.
Her work called “Black Ballerina” focuses on the dualities within ones identity, along with Syreeta’s blackness and indigeneity in relationship to classical ballet. This short work in progress solo gained recognition at the SummerWorks Festival in 2019 and won the Stratford Festival Lab Award for Research and Creation. In 2019, “Black Ballerina” was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award and is currently being performed internationally.
Currently, Syreeta is touring "Black Ballerina" and creating one commissioned ensemble creations. Syreeta gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for supporting the new work, “Not Another Naked White Person” which will act as the second chapter in her “Black Ballerina” series.
These experiences have deepened her creative, performance, and educational practices, and have fueled her teaching methodologies. She is an Assistant Professor in the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Department at York University.
“Hector is a deft visual storyteller.”-(Mooney on Theatre)
“There is no questioning the necessity for Hector’s work in the sphere of dance today.” -(The Dance Current)
