There’s no question that wood barrels impart their own flavours to wine when they’re used as vessels in the fermentation process. Winemakers have capitalized on the phenomenon for centuries. But wood sometimes drowns out the grapes' character, obscuring true expression, nuance and sense of place. Concrete tanks provide a fascinating alternative that allows for full voice of both grape and place, without the interference of oak.
