The City of Tales (Adapted) -
Please note the performance is in Farsi with an English summary available.
Blackout Art Society presents the second Canadian tour of City of Tales, a contemporary adaptation of Bijan Mofid’s timeless masterpiece, directed by Amir Naeim-Hosseini.
City of Tales, written by Bijan Mofid, is one of the most celebrated works of Iranian theatre and has touched the hearts of generations. Although often categorized as a children’s play, this musical drama explores the complexities of the modern human experience through rich humour and sharp social commentary.
The play serves as an elegy for those who have become estranged from their authentic selves in the pursuit of social status, sacrificing their innate identity along the way. Through its symbolic narrative, City of Tales examines themes of identity, personal struggle, and self-alienation. It portrays the emotional cost of the relentless pursuit of validation and belonging, ultimately revealing the profound sense of isolation that can result. Its rhythmic and musical elements enrich the storytelling, amplifying both its satirical and critical themes.
This new production is the result of months of collaboration among artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. From voice recording and music created by Iranian voice actors to modern choreography and dance performed by non-Iranian dancers, the production reflects a truly cross-cultural artistic effort.
