CelloFest: Paul Marleyn and Friends in Recital

Victoria Conservatory of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary with Focus on Strings – A series of concerts featuring internationally renowned artists including the New Orford String Quartet (May 16), CelloFest: Paul Marleyn and Friends in Recital (May 17), and the Victoria Conservatory Strings Faculty Artists in Concert (June 8).

These concerts celebrate the work of Victoria Conservatory’s Founding Head of Strings Sydney Humphreys, and cellist Jame Hunter, who together with the Conservatory’s founding Principal, pianist Dr. Robin Wood, performed as Trio Victoria across Vancouver Island and throughout Western Canada, growing awareness of the newly founded Music Conservatory in Victoria, and the excellent quality of music instruction it would become nationally renowned for.

CelloFest is a three-day event that begins with Paul Marleyn and Friends in Recital on Friday May 17, starting at 7:30 pm in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall. Following Friday’s concert, Paul Marleyn will be teaching a series of cello masterclasses over the weekend to young aspiring cellists studying at the Victoria Conservatory, and from around the South Island area.

Paul Marleyn and Friends in Recital

Internationally acclaimed cellist Paul Marleyn is joined by pianist Monica Pfau, and cellists Brian Yoon and Amy Laing, to perform a program of inspiring and eclectic works by composers Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Sollima, Barriere, Garner, Popper, and Menotti.

Cellist Paul Marleyn tours regularly in North America, Europe and Asia. As a frequent participant in summer festivals including the Prussia Cove, Busan, Festival of the Sound, Domaine Forget, Casalmaggiore, Leicester and Ottawa international festivals, he collaborates with artists such as Boris Berman, Miriam Fried, James Somerville, Paul Neubauer, Marc-André Hamelin, Steven Dann, Joshua Bell, and with members of the Tokyo, Vermeer, St. Lawrence and Hagen quartets. He has appeared as soloist the Belgrade Philharmonic, European Chamber, Winnipeg Symphony, Symphony Nova Scotia, Kitchener-Waterloo, Thunder Bay and Manitoba Chamber orchestras. Since 2000, Paul has been Artistic Director of the Agassiz International Chamber Music Festival in Winnipeg, and in 2006, joined the Trio Hochelaga, a group currently recording a series of discs of French music for the ATMA label. Paul Marleyn has made several compact disc recordings as on the United Records, CALA, Agassiz, Signum Classics, CBC and RCA Victor labels. From 1993-7, Paul was Principal Cellist of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and has served at professor of cello at the University of Manitoba, and most recently at the University of Ottawa.

Paul plays on a 1770 Pietro Landolfi cello made in Milan, Italy, known as “Il Cappuccino”.

The 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator located on the first floor: as you enter the building go down the ramp to your right and the elevator is on the left at the bottom. Priority seating can be provided at concerts if you have accessibility issues; please contact the Venues Department . Wheelchair accessible restrooms are located on the main floor, beside the lobby in the Reception and Registration area.
