Description
After more than a decade, EMMEDIA and Bug Incision are BACK.
If you remember the unforgettable noise shows and boundary-pushing concerts at EMMEDIA in the 2000s, you have a taste of what's in store. If you don't, we have reimagined the experience by pairing musicians and media artists for the first time!
Join us for a one-night-only improvised performance, where visuals and music collide in an experience that will never happen the same way again. Curated by Bug Incision's Chris Dadge, the evening will feature four experimental musicians, while two EMMEDIA artists perform live analog visuals, transforming the space with hand-crafted projections.
Whether you're a longtime fan of Calgary's underground music scene or simply curious to experience something unexpected, this is a rare opportunity to witness two communities reconnect.
We're offering pay-what-you-can tickets, so you can choose the price that best fits your situation. Come support local artists, celebrate the return of a beloved collaboration, and be part of a night that promises surprises from beginning to end.
Featuring: Chris Dadge, Andrea Scala, Jonathon Wilcke, Chad VanGaalen, Seyoung Lee, modal, Meghana Iyer, and REALPLAYER
Andrea Scala
Born in Italy and based in Toronto, Andrea Scala is a drummer and composer. He showed a natural inclination towards percussive instruments and creative arts since he was a kid. Andrea started from a teen age to work as a live and studio session drummer with various bands and songwriters, gathering several collaborations with established musicians in the field of rock and progressive music. He toured with pop, alternative, jazz, folk and world-music bands, performing at festivals, venues and clubs in Europe, Canada, USA. He continues to collaborate and develop original musical projects together with creative composers and musicians.
Over the years, Andrea had the opportunity to collaborate with several projects, his concerts and recordings include collaborations with: David Binney, Shahzad Ismaily, Jozef Dumoulin, Roberto Tarenzi, William Brittelle (Grammy-award winning), Nicola Costa, Francesco Puglisi, Karl Potter, Piccola Orchestra La Viola, O’ Zulù, Duo + 2 Quartet, Jeff kollmann, Tommy Denander, Ron Thal, etc. Andrea has been recording, performing, and producing music with some of the most visionary artists around: In 2024, he recorded the EP “ENDROLL” and subsequently the single “Till Next,” with the collaborative trio Shahzad Ismaily/Stanford Cheung/Andrea Scala, produced by Ismaily. Between 2024 and 2025, Andrea wrote, produced, and released “BURHST,” a collaborative single with Italian drummer and composer Roberto Pistolesi, and subsequently another single titled “Stems,” with American saxophonist and composer David Binney (creator/producer of David Bowie’s band Blackstar).
NHT/ Chad VanGaalen
NTH is the improvised synthetic noise project of Chad VanGaalen that has been in the works for almost a decade. It blends un quantized beats with morphing melodic samples that come and go with tape machines that are constantly being dragged through the swamp.
Seyoung
Seyoung is a keyboardist/sound artist based in Calgary. He is commonly known as the keyboardist of improvised duo FACT and improvised music collective CGSW. Unbound by genre, he has also worked more than 10 years as a session musician for numerous Calgary artists, including not only DEATHLETTUCE, but also Yolanda Sargeant, Thee Canadian Dispatch, and KODAE amongst others.
MODAL
A visualist and media artist, MODAL mixes visuals live, building evolving compositions of pixels in audio/video collaborations and installation works. For Bug Incision at EMMEDIA, MODAL will be wrangling video hardware from decades past with modern kit for a digital/analog adventure in improvised experimental visual performance.
Meghana Iyer
Meghana Iyer is an experimental video maker based in Mohkínstsis, Calgary, Alberta. Through the use of video, sculpture, performance, and glass, her practice explores themes of the self, materiality, and punk subcultures.
Proudly supported by City of Calgary, Calgary Arts Development, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and Canada Council for the Arts.
