With seven Canadian Screen Awards nominations, including best motion picture, best director and best original screenplay for Sophy Romvari and a best supporting role, drama for Vancouver actor Edik Beddoes, Blue Heron is the latest Canadian film to receive national and international acclaim. Shot in North Vancouver and Nanaimo, the film is loosely based on Romvari’s own story.

After a very strong festival season, Blue Heron, which has won major Canadian accolades, including Best Canadian Film at the 2025 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards and the Telefilm Canada One-to-Watch Award winner at the 2026 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards, is now set to reach a larger audience.

The youngest of four kids, Sophy was born in Canada after her parents and brothers had immigrated from Hungary. Her family lived on Gabriola Island until she was five years old, then they moved to Nanaimo. She has lived in Toronto since 2016. A deeply personal and intimate film about her childhood and her older brother’s mental health, Romvari’s work has drawn comparisons to another memory-based debut: Charlotte Wells’s Aftersun, which played to acclaim at the 2023 qathet international film festival.

A lyrical study of the twisting nature of memory and the lasting impact of childhood trauma, Canadian filmmaker Sophy Romvari’s debut Blue Heron has an authenticity and sensitivity that steers it through occasional moments of narrative affectation. The story of a Hungarian immigrant family of six settling into a new home on Vancouver Island in the late 1990s, as told through the eyes of the youngest child, the film’s slow pace and contemplative tenor rewards a patient viewer.

Blue Heron blurs the line between fact and fiction in a woozy, laconic way; this is a drama in which perspectives shift, timelines merge and soft-focus sequences are layered with a documentary-style aesthetic. It’s all part of the journey of recollection and discovery for protagonist Sasha – who we see as both a young girl and an adult – and for Romvari, who is using the narrative to unpick her own memories, to get to better grips with her own formative experiences.

While Blue Heron is a drama that works without any knowledge of the filmmaker’s history, Romvari’s feature is also the culmination of a decade-long journey. An international festival favorite since the mid-2010s, her acclaimed shorts regularly fall somewhere between fiction and autobiography, the latter to varying levels of overtness. If you’ve ever imagined how you’d try comforting your younger self or your family about the uncertain future ahead of them, Blue Heron may be the most emotionally devastating film of the year.
