Live Acts Canada + The Live Agency present:
Blackwood Kings with special guests Big EviL, Brehdren and Johnny Wrath
Now five years into their lifespan, Blackwood Kings has proven to be one of the more unique bands to pop up in the Victoria BC scene. In spirit and ethos, they’re a punk band, but while contemporaries may lean towards buzz-saw-distorted guitars and shouted vocals, Blackwood Kings favour the reverb-laden upstrokes of ska and dub, producing a politically and emotionally charged brand of reggae fusion that is uniquely their own. And while the foundation of Blackwood Kings sound is comprised of the aforementioned Jamaican genres, no musical idea is off limits, with songs frequently travelling into disparate realms such as math rock, fusion, and jungle.
Big EviL were forged by a master craftsman in the depths of a volcano, designed solely to provide music that is both large-scale and devoid of good intentions. An anonymous source has stated that Big EviL are “possibly one of the greatest avant-garde funk bands to form in Vancouver so far this year.” All of their songs are about fire, and they do their own choreography.
With varied musical backgrounds and a combined love of ska & reggae, the nine members of Brehdren bring in elements of jazz, indie pop and progressive rock to create their unique flavour. Based around a crazy, energetic front man, the rhythm and horn section cover a range of ground—from extended jams to two-minute freak outs. Not to be missed.
