Description
The BIG Research day is an annual tradition of Bioinformatics (BIOF), Interdisciplinary Oncology (IOP/IOGS) and Genome Science + Technology (GAST) graduate programs at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Over 120 graduate students from all three programs gather to present their research projects and attend seminars and workshops by academic and industry professionals. Graduate students in these three programs who are in their second year of the program or above are expected to present a poster at the annual BIG Research Day conferences as part of the program requirements. Poster printing is free for affiliated students who meet the poster submission deadline, details to be announced.
Join us to learn about the groundbreaking research being conducted here in British Columbia, and beyond! A light breakfast, lunch, and refreshments will be provided during the event. Join us after the conference for an optional social mixer with students and faculty, venue to be announced.
Every year the BIG Research Day explores different research areas. Our theme this year is: Intelligent Genome
We are pleased to welcome two keynote speakers this year!
Our first keynote speaker is Dr. Helder Nakaya, who is coming from the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Nakaya is an expert in bioinformatics, systems immunology, and predictive modelling particularly as it relates to infectious diseases.
Nobel Laureate Sir Richard J Roberts will be joining us as our second keynote speaker for BIG25! Sir Roberts shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery that mRNA is divided into introns and exons which can then undergo RNA splicing.
We would be delighted for interested members of the research community and general public to join us! Registration is free for everyone. Lunch and admission to the post-conference social mixer can be purchased at an early-bird rate of $30 at the time of registration. Early-bird registration ends on February 15, 2025.
For students and faculty presenting either a poster or speed talk at BIG25, we ask that you prepare an abstract. The deadline for abstract submission is February 15, 2025. Abstracts must be submitted separately from registration, and can be found here: Link to Abstract Submission
