Big ‡ Brave (Montreal)
With the initial seeds planted in 2012, with no other goal than simply experimenting with the instruments in their possession, Robin Wattie and Mathieu Ball started writing subtle ambient/minimalistic folk songs together. When long time friend Louis Alexandre Beauregard joined on drums, the goal still remained to play as tranquil as possible. After an incident where Wattie’s acoustic guitar broke, and having borrowed a friend’s electric as a replacement, larger amps that Ball had in storage from previous bands started to get incorporated to the outfit. Now with amplitude as a compositional tool, BB never lost interest in the power of minimalism and fragility. It became clear that loud volume would become just as effective as the lowest possible ones and the juxtaposition of both would become something BB still uses as their main MO to this day.

After self-releasing Feral Verdure in 2014, the band had the opportunity to open for Thee Silver Mt Zion in Montreal QC. After which, Efrim Manuel Menuck found something meaningful in the members and the band and invited them to open on future shows with Mt Zion and with Godspeed! You Black Emperor.

In 2015, the band entered the studio with Menuck and recorded “Au De La”. With no home for the record, they decided to take a chance in writing to Southern Lord. As luck would have it, Greg Anderson happened upon their email among hundreds and responded. Since then, the band has had a home with Southern Lord Records. (Along with Au De La, Southern Lord has released Ardor in 2017, A Gaze Among Them in 2019 and VITAL in 2021).

After Beauregard’s departure in 2018, the band traveled down to Rhode Island with Loel Campbell on drums to make a first record with Seth Manchester at Machines with Magnets. After the album’s release, with Campbell unable to tour, Tasy Hudson joined the ranks and the band spent most of the year touring their 2019 album “A Gaze Among Them”.

In 2020, the core trio of Ball, Wattie and Hudson once again made the trek down to Machines with Magnets to record their 5th LP “VITAL”. - https://southernlord.com/band/bigbrave/

Woodhawk (Calgary)
Made of equal parts 1970s Birmingham and a myriad of 21st century heavy who’s who. Capable and original, the band is able to craft anthemic fist pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés.

Dead Quiet (Vancouver)
With influences ranging from doom metal to classic rock, Dead Quiet seeks to meld melody with catastrophe as they weave through a dissonant landscape of crushing metallic riffs and sombre choral musings. While remaining loyal to many heavy metal foundations, the band is successful at pronouncing a heavy debut record with depth and honesty. Formed in the winter of 2013, Dead Quiet was created from the ashes of singer/guitarist Kevin Keegan’s since dismantled band, Barn Burner (Metal Blade). Keegan’s songs were brought to the experienced hands of Vancouver musicians, Jason Dana (Bend Sinister, Karen Foster), Brock Macinnis (Anciients, Tobeatic) and Mike Grossnickle (Hashteroid). With one record under their belts, Dead Quiet has recently finished their follow-up, titled Grand Rites. Having the addition of full-time key board player Justin Hagberg (3 inches of Blood) to the creative process, the songs have seen a richer dynamic and further broadened their already 70s rock and early heavy metal aesthetic. With the release of Grand Rites on the horizon, Dead Quiet hope to continue traversing the globe, playing what has become well known as an ultra energetic, charismatic and ear splitting live performance.

Stripmall (Calgary)
A coalition of Calgary punk mainstays, Stripmall is your teenage angst all grown up and ready to start a riot. Vocalist Geneva Haley howls over raucous riffs and thrashing drums, barreling towards oblivion at a breakneck pace. Keeping true to their namesake, Stripmall's brand of prairie-punk is the by-product of suburban sprawl, where isolation and frustration mix into a rock and roll powder keg. - https://m.sledisland.com

Counterfeit Jeans (Edmonton)
Lingering in the space between calculated dissonance and all-out anarchy, Counterfeit Jeans eagerly flirt with the threat of full collapse while remaining in complete control. Noisy, angular and sonically dense, this post-punk three-piece is the catalyst to a chemical reaction of explosive sound. - https://www.sledisland.com/2018/counterfeit-jeans

Hair Control (Calgary)
Pop magic produced by a wizard.

Facecut (Lethbridge)
Garage rock for post-angst punks. Thick layers of tasty hooks and juicy beats for elevated palates.

Chief & Council (Siksika)
Chief n’ Council come from the prairies of Siksika Nation, Alberta. Their music is presented as a mix of alternative and rock heavily influenced by a rural lifestyle on the Rez. With roots from Treaty 7 & 8 this pair of cousins bring a glimpse of their world through a combination of drums, sage, sweetgrass and guitar.
