Bad Art Club: Early Days of Design (Abstractions)

Step into the early days of graphic design and explore how designers used simple tools to create bold visual statements. Before digital programs, designers relied on scanning, cutting, pasting, and arranging letters and images by hand to craft posters, album covers, and advertisements. Every choice of type, spacing, and layout was made with care to communicate style and mood.

In this hands-on project, you will create a band or movie poster using these early design and typography techniques. You will experiment with cutting and arranging letters, layering images, and composing a dynamic layout that captures attention. This process encourages creativity and problem-solving as you explore how to make text and visuals work together without relying on a computer.

This class celebrates the tactile, inventive roots of graphic design while giving you a chance to make your own striking poster. By the end you will have a unique piece that reflects the craft and energy of the pre-digital design era.
