BACK HOME  follows the filmmaker’s pursuit to get to know her older brother, Josh, twenty years after he took his own life. As she connects with the friends who knew him best as a teen, a complex portrait emerges. Through intimate recollections re-imagined on Super8 and 16mm film, and lyrical images hand-processed with plants, seaweed, soil and ashes, ‘back home’ floats between memory and present time in a fragmented meditation on grief and loss: illuminating the transformative power of healing in community. 

 

Nisha Platzer (she/her) is an award-winning director and experimental filmmaker from Vancouver. Her films meld sounds and imagery that you can dream and drown in, exploring themes of queerness, youth, disability and healing. Nisha’s short film, Vaivén (2020) won the best film award at aluCine Media Arts Festival and competed at festivals worldwide including Raindance, Festival Nouveau Cinéma, VIFF, FIDBA, and Ji.hlava. She studied at the renowned Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba and her work has been supported by Telefilm, Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, Creative BC and the National Film Board of Canada. She is a member of Vancouver’s Iris Film Collective, which promotes the creation and sharing of analog films and part of the programming team for DIM Cinema at The Cinemateque. An alumnus of IDFAcademy, the DGC mentorship program, and Hot Docs Accelerator Lab, her work has appeared in music videos, documentaries and experimental films. Nisha’s first feature documentary ‘back home’ was supported by Telefilm Talent to Watch and presented at the Docs-in-Progress Canadian Showcase at Cannes Film Festival. She is a current member of the Directors Guild of Canada and is adapting a beloved Canadian novel for the screen.

MONOGRAPH began in 2018 as an ongoing series of experimental film programs with a specific focus on analogue and handmade artist film practices. Curated by Kyle Whitehead, each program focuses on the works of a single artist, filmmaker or collective. As Calgary and Southern Alberta’s only presenter dedicated entirely to experimental and expanded cinema, the series aims to elevate the local film community, exposing audiences to film artists and their works which are otherwise at risk of oversight in the region.
