Description

Alex Bent + the Emptiness is the recording and performing alt-pop/R&B solo project of Saskatoon singer Alex Bent. Likened to that of hip-hop/R&B artists Post Malone, Joji and Frank Ocean, Bent mixes his own twist of nostalgia with the current trends of the genre.

His debut EP, Vanilla Blue was mastered by Trevor Case of Case Mastering (Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliot). Its title track, “Vanilla Blue”, was premiered exclusively on Hip Hop Canada, and has amassed over 20,000 Spotify plays. More recently, Bent released the single, “Gwen Stefani” which premiered on Earmilk, and features contributions from Brockhampton affiliates singer-songwriter Jack Larsen and producer Connor Barkhouse. Subject matter that Bent touches on offers a unique perspective on the celebration that follows the breakup of an unhealthy relationship.

Alex Bent + the Emptiness has been an active live act since 2016 playing opening slots for Phantogram, Cub Sport and [Sebell], as well as being featured at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, ON in April 2017 and May 2019. With a western Canadian tour currently in the works for fall 2019, Bent plans to spend the year touring in support of his upcoming album, Baby.

Samurai Champs

Hailing from two Canadian cities – “The Bridge City”, Saskatoon, and “The Queen City”, Regina, Samurai Champs is a recording and performing future-hip-hop/R&B duo. Comprised of rapper Jeah and singer Merv xx Gotti, the duo draw influence from their Southeast Asian heritage, while taking pride in their urban-Canadian identity. Blending Jeah’s versatile rap delivery with Merv xx Gotti’s emotional R&B vocals, the duo create a smooth, yet dark coalescence of contemporary hip-hop/R&B.

Following their Urban Artist of the Year nomination in 2019’s Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMAs), Samurai Champs recently released their debut album, Cabernet Sauvignon. Within the past month, the album has received significant media attention. The album’s singles have been featured on media outlets such as Sora Music Asia and HipHopCanada, received playlist placement on Spotify’s official Just Vibing and Fresh Finds: The Wave curatorial playlists, and the album itself has been streamed over 80,000 times within the first week of its release.

The album was mixed by New York’s MSR Studios alumni, Walter Jeworski, and Jazz Cartier’s Juno Award-winning producer and engineer, Michael Lantz. The album was mastered by Chris Athens, mastering engineer behind Drake’s Grammy Award-winning album, Views. Blending the diverse sounds of Toronto’s OVO Sound label with the soulful minimalism of L.A.’s Soulection, Cabernet Sauvignon is now available on all music platforms.

Samurai Champs has toured internationally and performed at festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW) (Austin, TX), North by Northeast (NXNE) (Toronto, ON), Reeperbahn (Hamburg, GE), The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn, Estonia), Upstream Music Fest (Seattle, WA), Sound City (Liverpool, UK), BreakOut West (Edmonton, AB), and many more.

Surrounding Samurai Champs’ European tours, the duo have received notable festival press highlights from significant UK media outlets. The UK’s largest independent music blog, The Line of Best Fit listed Samurai Champs as one of 20 Of The Most Exciting Bands On The Planet To See At The Great Escape, and Gigwise also named Samurai Champs as one of the 11 New Bands From The Great Escape That You Need In Your Life and 5 Top Acts to see at Tallinn Music Week.

Samurai Champs are currently preparing for their upcoming 2019 Southeast Asia tour surrounding their festival performance at Music Matters Live, Singapore.

The Sex Geckos

The Sex Geckos play music in the genres of gutter pop, fuzz death, trash rock, and slaughter/drugsurf, none of which are real genres. They're the snotty punk neighbour that you secretly thought was badass, and the party that you would call the cops on, but they're playing Thee Oh Sees, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and Joy Division, so you let it slide. The Sex Geckos are aliens... but they don't come in peace.

TEFRONDON

Growing up interested in the arts at a young age, music, fashion, photography, and graphic design have always been a part of his life. Primarily known in Saskatoon for DJing, he also works as a freelance graphic designer and content curator for his own Living Skies On The Rise zine, while associated with the music collective, Trifecta.

Around 2013, after countless nights of surfing music blogs and downloading music, Ron was encouraged by DJ friends to eventually start spinning. At the same time, he has been creating mixes and uploading them online which have reached all over the world. With over 17 mixes to his name — accumulating thousands of plays — his music is being heard from France to Japan.
In 2015, he earned his diploma in Graphic Design/New Media Production. His freelance work includes creating logos, flyers, web design, photography and video editing.

To date, TEFRONDON has performed consistently between Toronto and Saskatchewan. In Toronto, he has DJed at premier venues such as Apt. 200, Cold Tea Bar and The Libertine. Back home, he hosts two residencies: "LITUATIONS” — a monthly kickback party for music indulgers at Saskatoon’s hidden gem spot, Flint Saloon, and “soirée” - a bi-weekly club night at Saskatoon’s Melody Bar. Catch him seamlessly spin an eclectic range of sounds from new modern rap, classic hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, house, rock, funk and soul.

TEFRONDON is also principal DJ for Canadian hip-hop/R&B group, Samurai Champs. With the band, he has performed internationally at festivals such as SXSW (Austin, TX), Upstream Music Fest (Seattle, WA), and Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, Germany).

Recently, TEFRONDON has opened for numerous prominent recording artists, most notably being singer-songwriter/record producer Russ, and OVO Sound signee, Roy Woods.
In 2019, you can expect TEFRONDON on tour with Samurai Champs, DJing in cities around North America, and releasing new content and product from his own brand, as well as a new issue of his zine, L.S.O.T.R.
