Description
Through the medium of contemporary dance, Raven Spirit Dance shares stories and experiences from an Indigenous worldview. Featuring special guests Wagana Aboriginal Dancers, visiting from Australia.
Performing Spine of the Mother- an innovative collaboration which began with Indigenous artists in Canada and Peru - the dancers trace the inner terrain of their bodies as women. The “Spine of Mother Earth” metaphor is the name Indigenous Elders in South America gave to the Andean mountain range that spans from the base in Argentina through the Americas and ends at the tip of Alaska. In this dance, their bodies become the landscape like the mountain ranges that connect the North and South (the Eagle and the Condor), and through this find their kinetic connection to others transmitting impulse, breath, and spirit.
Raven Spirit Dance is joined by special guests, Wagana Aboriginal Dancers, who incorporate Australian Aboriginal song and dance from the Wiradjuri peoples - "people of the three rivers" - with the beautiful sound of the yidaki in their piece Wurimbirra: to take care.”
