Description
Ava Maya is a saxophone player from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who specializes on the baritone saxophone. She is a blooming musician and composer who is actively involved in Winnipeg’s vibrant music scene.
Ava recently graduated from the Desautels Faculty of Music under the mentorship of Jon Gordon. As a composer, she focuses on creating music that is personal, emotional and infused with her own values and life experiences. Sources of inspiration vary from heritage, identity, grief, mental health and what it means to be a queer biracial woman in music.
Ava has played at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Legislative Building, Lyric Theatre, Burton Cummings Theatre, Festival Du Voyageur as well as other venues across Manitoba. Although she specializes in jazz, she is inspired by many kinds of music including Afro-Beat, Folk, Neo-Soul and Carribean/Indo-Carribean genres.
