Description

The Town of York Historical Society will host its 42nd Annual General Meeting on Thursday, September 11th at Campbell House Museum. The event will begin with a business meeting followed by a special presentation titled “Let’s Go Shopping: A History of Toronto Retail from Markets to Department Stores” featuring local historian, Michael Andrew Binetti.

This event is free for TYHS members and $20 for non-members. TYHS membership status will be checked so please select the correct ticket type.

Memberships and renewals can be purchased at TownofYork.com. Light snacks will be served, and wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

  • Attendance: This is an in-person event with limited spots available. Pre-registration is required for attending members and non-members.

About the Presentation: Dive into the retail history of one of North America’s top downtown shopping destinations - downtown Toronto. From the first shops and markets of the Town of York, to the grand department stores, and more modern malls that now define downtown shopping. Dress to impress and come delve into Toronto’s downtown palaces of retail. 

About the Speaker: Michael is an urban planner specializing in public transit planning, and the founder of Exploring with Binetti, which aims to bring the city’s history to life through living history events and tours. Aside from public transit, Michael’s urban planning interests include the history of Toronto, the history and economies of  downtown districts, and the cultural impact department stores and retail have had on our cities.
