Angela Turone is a Toronto-born and locally-based vocalist and pianist who is quickly establishing herself on the Canadian jazz scene. Angela's voice has been described by WholeNote Magazine as "warm [and] pure", and Jazz Journal calls it a "fresh, youthful sound". Her distinct style has been inspired by her love for classic vocal jazz and Brazilian bossa nova and samba genres.
A graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz Performance Program, Angela has performed at Toronto's top jazz venues and in some of Ontario's best-known jazz festivals including the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, the Kensington Market Jazz Festival and the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival. Angela has also been a part of the Niagara Jazz Festival's Twilight Jazz Series and the TD Toronto Jazz Festival's "Generations in Jazz" concert. Angela has performed alongside Juno Award-winning saxophonist Mike Murley, singing on Murley's original song "Minas Mist" and recorded on his 2013 album "Reflections" with the University of Toronto Jazz Orchestra. In 2014, she was awarded the Jazz.FM91 Mary Alice Stuart Scholarship.
Angela's debut album "Sounds of Brazil" [2020] is a collaboration with Canadian guitarist Chris Platt that features their "fresh and faithful" arrangements of Brazilian bossa nova and samba classics that have greatly influenced their careers and artistry. "Sounds of Brazil" charted 73rd on the Jazzweek charts. It features a stellar line-up of some of Canada's finest jazz musicians, including Chase Sanborn, Pat Collins, Andrew Downing, Robin Claxton, John Nicholson and Helio Cunha and is produced by Gordon Sheard.
This show is the part of the series "Hugh's Room Live Presents: Women in Music", featuring established and emerging singer-songwriters and is curated by Sammy Jackson and made possible with the support of Ontario Creates.
