Description

In-between the +15 with Andrea Wong

March 9th @ 2PM

This walk dips in and out of the +15 skywalk as the sun teases us in early March with the coming of spring. Many places are considered "in-between"; they sit between more seemingly important destinations, becoming unnoticed highways. What if we intentionally visited these highways, transforming the journey into a destination? What fills the soundscape of these places? What have we not noticed before? Do we experience a freshness in everyday sounds when we weave between? On this silently guided soundwalk, there will be moments of pause where participants will be encouraged with prompts to write a few words on a clipboard. These short written observations will later be read at the end of the walk in the form of a poem.

Andrea Wong is a sound artist new to Calgary whose musical background stems from classical piano and Canadian folk fiddle. She discovered an interest in sound and technology during her involvement as a programmer with Sonic UBC Laptop Sounds and Sensors (SUBCLASS) where she worked alongside other musicians and dancers in composing for interactive media art performance works. Since then, Andrea has worked in sound design for interactive media including virtual reality games and interactive installations, as well as fixed media such as short animations and live performances including electroacoustic operas at various Canadian festivals. Her passion and curiosities have led her in a pursuit of using technology to create meaningful and accessible immersive experiences. Andrea’s current musical practice is focused on creating sincere relationships and unique dialogues through free improvisation. She can be found performing on a Chinese guzheng augmented with computer electronics, and hosting her regular community series Improv Karaoke. She currently sits on the board of directors of Vancouver New Music. www.ahywong.com
