Description

The Live Agency presents:

Vancouver International Jazz Festival

Air Stranger with special guests The Escapes, Clay Ravens, Westwinds and Nicole Audrey

AIR STRANGER (Vancouver) // https://www.airstranger.com/

Air Stranger is a group whose musical style emerges from the conjunction of funk and progressive rock. It is at this unique crossroads where the band synthesizes their seemingly disparate influences, merging the technical intricacies of Victor Wooten and Guthrie Govan with the harmonic progressions of John Coltrane and Danny Elfman. They then superimpose these concepts over the backdrop of contagious grooves reminiscent of James Brown and Rage Against the Machine.

Seb Chamney contributes solos of virtuosic flare and progressions of harmonic boldness. Our vocalist Sophie Rischar enraptures audiences with her emotional and powerful voice and her unique vocal rasp a-la Janis Joplin.

The grooves and backdrop provided by brothers Eric and Colin Sankey govern the rhythmic direction of the piece, grounding the musicians playing over them, whilst compelling the audience to incessantly tap their feet.

Air Stranger's ultimate goal is to merge a variety of musical idioms whilst delivering keen lyrical insight. Just be careful when you listen to them, because you never know when the Thought Police might be listening.

THE ESCAPES (Surrey) // https://theescapesband.bandcamp.com/

Rock, jazz, funk, pop, and everything in between. We are a band of five young people from White Rock who love writing and performing our own music.

CLAY RAVENS (Vancouver) // http://www.clayravens.com/

Clay Ravens are a sweat soaked foot-stomping indie folk band from Vancouver that has been captivating audiences with their energetic live performances since 2014.

Founded upon the guttural, honey-smoked harmonies of their vocal blend, Clay Ravens began as a singer-songwriter folk duo between siblings Justin and Brianne Huntley Smith. Their songs lent themselves to a bigger sound and more complex arrangements, so they began recruiting some of Vancouver’s most talented musicians to develop the Clay Ravens vision.

With each new contributor came an unexpected twist to the original idea. Incorporating Brendan Tydall’s shredding twang electric guitar style, Matt Cook-Contois’ legendary fiddle chops, Kelsey Butkus’ technical bass skills, and Tim Lanham’s hard hitting beats, the band has formed an extremely unique indie folk sound.

WESTWINDS (Vancouver) // https://www.facebook.com/WestwindsOfficial/

Westwinds is a music project by Vancouver folk artist Gareth McDonnell.

While serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Gareth re-kindled his love for creating and performing songs while playing with his crew mates aboard HMCS Ottawa during his numerous sails. The newly refurbished hobby quickly became obsession, and before his eventual release from the military, he had begun the first recordings to be featured on his debut release: 'The EP'.

The EP is an alluring, melodic and sonically satisfying 4-track record. Each song tells a new tale of longing, heartbreak, or coming of age built upon his experiences in work and life. Gareth McDonnell and Producer Greg Drummond teamed up with few simple instruments and bright ideas to provide each listener with quality music good for anything from dancing, to the song that helps you fall asleep. This is surely a record not to miss.
